Oh, yes, the conductor had a few 'mishaps' in certain places, and the supporting cast of Micaela and Escamillo are not nearly as good as the leading roles of Carmen and Jose, but overall, this production is about the most entertaining and riveting available on DVD so far, and the 'smaller' roles of the Gipsy camp, are in fact nearly as good as the two leading ones.
Antonacci is a 'soprano' Carmen - this is the first time I see and hear about her, and the impression is not as bad as some critics ... Read More:

One of my favorite operas. The sets were rather spartan, but the music is excellent. My major gripe is with the subtitles in the DVD (and the reason for my 4 star review) - they are very poor. I understand little Russian, and the subtitles appear once every few minutes. At least if they enclosed the libretto with the DVD I would have been able to follow the singing while listening/watching.

DVD : Monteverdi - L'incoronazione di Poppea / Haymon · Balleys · Liang · Chance · van der Kamp · Grant Murphy · Fouchécourt · Visse · McFadden · Vink · Piau · Berg · Les Talens Lyriques · Rousset · Audi (Amsterdam Opera 1994)
Few if any operas have ever combined such sublime music with such a profoundly philosophical libretto. For that reason, few operas cry out so urgently for meaningful staging and effective acting, as well as for superb musical values. This production by Les Talens Lyriques, directed by Christophe Rousset, achieves 100% musically and a quite sufficient 85% dramatically.

Poppea is a study in moral ambiguity, and every character in every scene contributes something to the unsettling of our moral expectations. ... Read More:

I have been watching this DVD of L'incoronazione di Poppea - the Musiciens du Louvre / Marc Minkowski recording - this past weekend. I quite like this DVD version of the opera, in spite of the cuts. However! I do have the Les Talens Lyriques' DVD directed by Christopher Rousset - a complete (uncut) interpretation which I found profoundly satisfying. I also have the VHS video of the Nikolaus Harnoncourt / VCM recording of this opera - which I enjoyed immensely some years ago, in spite of its many idiosyncracies. Minkowski has some tough ... Natalie is the ultimate Euridice with marvelous acting and incredible singing. She generously sprinkles sparkling high G's throughout the show. If she couldn't sing she would have been a famous comedienne. The rest of the cast is delightful. Bethone's Cupid, Naouri's Jupiter, Beuron's Orphee, Olmeda'a Public Opinion, all singing the wonderful Offenbach music. The Fly Song, The Kissing Song...

I could do without the trasvestite dancers (maybe fast forward was invented for that)......but after all, its a French production.
