| This is a great piece of Historical Fiction, I believe that it represents Christopher Columbus to a tee! I liked the cast, many of these actors are famous and a good number of supporting roles I recognized from other films. The beginning is a bit boring but don't let that stop you from seeing it. Illustrious and exciting! |

| What a shame that the only existing DVD of Juan Diego Florez in one of his signature roles is in this wrong-headed "Don Pasquale." Wrong-headed because once again we have an opera director for whom restraint seems to be a four-letter word. Yes, this is opera buffa, but as anyone who has seen a successful performance of this piece knows, the moments of comedy are leavened with those of genuine heart and poignancy. | I have only one beef with this performance: instead of a statue, the Commendatore's gravestone is a large black abstract sculpture, and during the dinner scene DonG tries to feed a small replica of it (actually wipes its "mouth" with a napkin).
Also in the first scene Matti Salminen shakes his buttocks at the audience in a completely inappropriate way. Other than that it's great. |
