| I bought this DVD because of Aquiles Machado. I saw him in L'Elisir d'Amore DVD from TDK filmed in the Arena Sferisterio Macerata. I got a great surprise in this Boheme DVD. Not only was Machado excellent again, but the whole production in Madrid is first class. This is a traditional production with singers that can really act. | It is relatively easy to review a live performance because it is a one-off event and hence can be considered on its merits. However, when one has more than one version of an opera on DVD at home, it seems natural to have a look at the others and compare. I have two other excellent productions of Rigoletto, and regrettably, this one comes up very much wanting.

| Having studied opera with the great Tina Piazza--a student of Melochi and friend of Del Monaco--I cannot disagree more heartily with David from Iceland. This is one of the most joyous performances I have ever experienced of opera on DVD. What is missing from all the rather staid Met performances is the presence of an essential element of live opera--the audience.
