Ms Dessi braved a sabotage phone ring and went on to triumph in her role as Norma. That is true. But while this triumph puts her on par with the other non-coloratura exponents of Norma such as Papian & Theodossiu, it certainly does not make her (or any of them) successors of Callas, Sutherland or Caballe. One has to lower one's expectations of coloratura to appreciate Dessi's Norma. Her tone is not exactly beautiful either. But drama she gives us, and in this diminished form, Bellini's Norma ... If you are looking for just one all-around great dvd of Don Carlo, this may not be the exact thing for you, from a dramatic or visual standpoint. It's a very good recording as to the singing aspects. Pavarotti sings very nicely. He has a nice Corelli-ish edge to the voice which gives the impression of drama, but at the same time he has a lyric feel - I really enjoy listening to him here. Dessi is a great Italian soprano. This is a good role for her. People are often looking for a rich voice ... Read More:

DVD : Puccini - Tosca / Dessi, Armiliato, Raimondi, Benini, Madrid Opera
This "Tosca" is a pure joy for the eyes and the ears. Daniella Dessi, Fabio Armiliato, and Ruggero Raimondi form the cast of fascinating principal characters. Director Nuria Espert has created an original environment where power, love, desire, and revenge intertwine in many ways. Dessi's Tosca is a true Diva--simultaneously flirtacious and somewhat enchanted by Scarpia. Armiliato's Cavaradossi is a sunny soul with a good heart and lots of love for the Diva. Baron Scarpia is brilliantly portrayed by Raimondi ... Read More:

This is an excellent concert. Singing and orchestra are great as are the selections. The comments between selections do not, in my opinion, add anything and are not worth hearing more than once but can be skipped using the skip button on the remote.

In several of the scenes in Act Two, the conductor Muti, larger than life, is superimposed upon the stage action, in some cases completely blocking out the singers. I found this disconcerting, particularly distracting as the opera is ending. None of the reviewers have mentioned this; if I had known, I should never have purchased this DVD version of the opera. I have never seen such disrespect for the performers, nor such disregard for viewers like me who want to watch the performance, not the conductor.

I agree with the other reviewer that this is a visually substandard production. I can't be sure, but I think that this is due in part to the fact that it was originally an Italian TV production. The conversion from European standard to North American standard TV may in part be responsible for this. Sometimes this gives the illusion of dancing flames in backstage "rooms" reflected on a wall. You can tell how fuzzy the picture is when you see the crisp subtitles superimposed. Having said all that---I had a whale of a time with it, really ... Read More:

The reviews here seem rather divided but if you read them carefully you will see that everyone pretty much agrees that this is a first rate production with top notch performers. Technical issues seem to have affected some of the viewers in a negative way, but I wasn't distracted in the least. I thought this version was a lot of fun. The production captures the spirit of this provocative masterpiece very nicely. It is convincingly acted and is very entertaining--- from beginning to end. Adelina Scarabelli as Despina is the stand out performer ... Read More:

The production is beautiful and the musical performances are, for the most part, very good. The soprano is a bit relentless in her sadness (visually, body language, etc.) but she sings very well. Altogether I would say this is a good choice for anyone wanting a traditional approach to this essential opera.

I agree with the above review by Mr. Santos but not for the same reasons or, at least, the same order of reasons. The fact that the TV director (here is where Brian Large makes all the difference) chose to focus on Placido Domingo more than it should be recommended is bad. But in time we get accustomed and even forget that Placido is there. What we cannot forget and never will, even after months after having seen this recording, are the tremendously ugly, horrific and tasteless costumes and scenery.
The concept behind this staging was that if a butterfly ... Read More:
