We bought both seasons of "Carnivale" after missing its run on TV. We had heard many positive things about it and given the difference from the norm in plot, time frame (30s), and venue we enjoyed the first season so we bought the second. It was a well done as the first but it obviously begs for a continuation of the story. All the plot angles are left unresolved and one gets no real closure from watching the finale. Well done, enjoyable, but unfulfilled in the ending.

Incredible acting by Winona Ryder and Angelina Jolie. This movie is worth watching to see fine acting on display. Great characters and behavior development, however this film lacks direction and a good, solid believable plot, but the performances are the key in this film piece.

"But I'm a Cheerleader" is a campy, sardonic take on the "ex-gay" camps for youngsters. Megan (Natasha Lyonne) realizes she's noticing her fellow squad members more than her footballer boyfriend, and her parents, Bud Cort (of "Harold and Maude") and Mink Stole along with Michelle Williams (of "Brokeback Mountain") stage an intervention. Megan is driven off, unwillingly,to True Directions, where girls wear pink and boys wear blue. The nasty Mary (a hilarious Cathy Moriarty) is in charge, with her son Rock (Eddie ... Read More:

As a person who was mesmerized by Robert Greysmith's book, I did not think any movie production based on the same events could compare. I was wrong. This is a wonderful movie, if you like true crime productions, and mind boggling even if you don't. As a young Army wife who took a two week TDY to SF, I found myself staying in an el cheapo motel right next to The Presidio where Zodiac, who was still active, had done some of his most heineous handiwork. I was frightened and always looking over my shoulder. As a ... Read More:

Ten people wind up stranded at a desert motel during a thunderstorm. All is well until someone starts killing them one by one. IDENTITY is a movie w/ loads of secrets and twisty surprises. The action grows increasingly odd and ultimately turns completely illogical. In the end, we find that this is necessary to the story. John Cusack, Ray Liotta, and Amanda Peet play the central characters. The rest of the cast is equally awesome, w/ Rebecca DeMornay (The Hand That Rocks The Cradle), Clea Duval (How To Make A Monster), Alfred ... Read More:

"The Laramie Project"

Remembering Matthew Shephard

Amos Lassen

I doubt that any of us will forget the terrible murder of Matthew Shephard. But one good thing came out of it and that was that it united out community much like the AIDS epidemic did. After Shephard was murdered, members of the New York Tectonic Theater Project went to Laramie, Wyoming and they wrote a play there that later became this movie (which was shown on HBO television). They based their play on the 200 interviews they conducted ... Read More:

John Carpenter is a great director. He has a great sense of humor, great timing and has great skills. In fact, he is a great disciple of the classical form: austere, precise and always economic in terms of narrative... in the same tradition of one great master of the past: Howard Hawks. Don't take my word for it. Check the opening sequence of Vampires and compare it with the opening sequence of Hatari!. The similarities are striking and one can clearly see how Carpenter dominates his art.

But this film is very weak. The story ... Read More:

"Anamorph" focuses on veteran NYPD detective Stan (Willem Dafoe), who's drawn into a gruesome case involving a string of ghastly serial murders perpetrated by a killer who commits his crimes as an artist. As he investigates the killings, Stan finds he must confront his own deadly past. With each murder, the investigation takes a different, uglier turn. The closer he's drawn to the murders, the closer Stan comes to being a victim himself. The R-rated film has the look and feel of such movies as "Seven" and "Saw," with disturbing images and a sustained ... Read More:
