| These days many music fans with grounding in good ol' rock and roll have bent their ears to light, melodic jazz standards. Here's a challenge: pick up this low-priced CD, take note of the famous names and that each track averages about 3 minutes in length - that's what us rockers have been raised on.

| What can one say about Pollini at this point? Once again he delivers careful, intelligent performances that somehow come across as impersonal and unpoetic. The "meaning" of a piece of music may be a subjective matter, but the issue does not seem to have crossed his mind. One suspects that he (and fellow modernists like Boulez) might be derisive of the whole idea.

| For the uninitiated, the Loussier Trio has been doing Jazz renditions of Bach's works for over 40 years now. On Amazon alone you can find two or three dozen albums from this catalogue, and it can be difficult to tell them apart.
This particular album is by far the most modern; indeed, there have been more recent releases of remasterings of the original 60s recordings, but this album represents a newer generation of the Trio. | In a sea of Four Seasons recordings, Gil Shahmam's version is perhaps the one that stands out in my mind the most. His playing is flawless and tasteful: the vurtoso passages are never over-the top but they aren't blase either and he is very lyrical in the slow movements. Mr. Shaham works well with the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra and their choice of dynamics creates excitment and adds to the emotional depth of these concerti. | We had a vinyl album back when I was growing up only it had a different cover on the jacket entitled, "Leroy Anderson's Christmas Carols." The jacket pictured a white cat sitting in front of a tinsel-strewn Christmas tree. Although this is not the exact same thing it is as close to the original performed by L. Anderson without rereleasing the original which I truly hope they do sometime soon.
