| Incredible technique with the organ. One would think that what he does is impossible, but yet he does it. Musical value is questionable but entertaining. Reminds me of Virgil Fox at his best, but technique overshadows the music to a great extent. Loved the DVD just to see it all happen. This guy can have a great future, but the musical values must be improved a great deal. Fun to listen to and watch, worth the price. |

| The sumptuous tone that characterises Joshua Bell's CD provides what promises to be a brilliant listening experience. But for me there is a very fine line between sensitivity and sentimentality and too often he slithers over into unlovely swoops and slurs. Lush lyricism or sloppy sentiment? I don't think I will be listening to this CD very often but I will buy his interpretation of Tchaikovsky's Violin concerto which is a wonderful test of sensitivity v. sentimentality and see whether he will let the great composer ... Dorothy Loudon will always be the best Ms. Hannigan (sorry Carol!), Andrea McArdle will always be the best Annie, and Reid Shelton will always be the best and brassiest Daddy Warbucks. | Kleiber's account of the 5th stands out because of its precision and speed. Usually these two factors relate inversely and therein lies Kleiber's achievement, I would say, especially considering that this symphony's drama requires an urgency. Karajan's '63 recording is precise and reasonably quick, however it is a rather interpretive account and also pares off some of the space between the strings, bass, and brass.
