| It's easy to think that the culture is in decline (mostly because it is), but Wynton is proof that we are not done for yet. He is the real thing, whether you like classical or jazz or whatever. | I heard Murray Perahia performed this monumental work live in an October 2000 recital. Even though I am a big fan of his and this work, I found myself wanting more that was not in that performance. I have his recording of the work and have listened to it many times over the years and still found myself a bit under-whelmed. | This is the perfect CD to counter Strawinski's dead-pan remark that Vivaldi just wrote one concerto 500 times.
Of course Igor was right in a sense. It hasn't been untill the last 25 years or so that a clear image of Vivaldi's versatile genious has emerged. This is a Vivaldi CD that has everything to it. The nearest compeditor is perhaps Trevor Pinnock's excellent recording on ARCHIV, which also features the two mandoline concerti and the Concerto "con molti strumenti" in C major. ... Read More: |

| Out of three recordings of this performance by three different chorales and conductors, this is the finest! Music, like art is in the "eyes and ears" of the beholder/listener, and for me, this is perfection! |

| I purchased this because I had heard many of the pieces before but felt that the interpretations were pale and limp and so I took the chance that this master player would breathe life into them. I was not in any way disappointed. Perlman has a wonderful touch with his instrument and knows these pieces intimately. His playing is breathtakingly beautiful and far superior to any other versions that I have heard. I recommend this CD highly - especially in a peaceful, quiet setting where you can savor each wonderful melody. |

| I'll make this brief; the other reviewer have said what I would have stated, that this is a great recording. The one thing I would like to add, as an avid violin (and cello, my sister is a cellist) fan, is that the sheer intensity and almost raw (without being crude) power of these recordings, especially the Oistrakh, put them in a class by themselves. The violin cadenza literally knocks you out of your chair. I can't think of a single contemporary violinist who could approach this. There is something from the solar plexus about it. Combined ... | Martha Argerich is a magnificent pianist. She is a force of nature. Her physicality is commanding and brilliant. Her unique interpretations are bold and compelling. Unlike many CDs, the fact the recording is of a "live" performance, does not detract from its impact. I have been fortunate to attend a few of her concerts (happily, she DID appear each time!) and this CD recaptured, for me, the excitement of her magic. |
