| These ladies sing medieval chant. It's usually written in a polyphonic (more than one melody) line that was intended to play off of each other in a perfect unity (strictly avoiding the tri-tone or any other less "holy" intervals).

| In some places, the playing seems rushed and in others, it sounds uncoordinated. There are better versions of these sonatas out there. |

| While there may be no perfect "Messiah" recording out there, this is STILL one of the very finest, and I've owned it since its original release & still return to it regulary. Emma Kirkby's solos alone make this One of the top Three to Five choices out there among hundreds of versions available. | These are Beethoven's 9 Symphonies conducted by Bernstein with Vpo (1977-79 years). There is some persistent. The persistence might be clearly understood, if you compare these with his works of Beethoven's 9 Symphonies with NYP (1961-64 years) ASIN: B00006OA68. I think that the persistence is caused by Bernstein's decline, though the decline is helped in Vienna Phil's good performance and the good performance of the excellent song hand in ninth symphony. | All good. Elgar the way it should be played- plenty of emotion. Late romanticism should be played from the heart- almost to the extreme of 'haming it up'. The tears will roll, the joy of laughter is obvious- its fantastic. I wish today's performers were brave enough to let their hair down sufficiently when playing music from this era. |

| The recording is a fantastic snap shot of a truly great artist at the top of his game. The Lp version is a bit more lush in terms of overall sound. I wish someone would remaster this to 180 gram vinyl. This set is a wonderful opportunity to experience music playing beyond belief! |

| To set the parameters here, I know nothing of academics regarding music. So this review is for those who look to read layman/casual remarks. My first criteria for most 'music'al anything is: does it create an emotion. Without question, hands down, irrevocably, this version most certainly did! And not just for a track or two: in its entirety, this version is stunning. | What flaw you're wondering? The slow moments are just too slow. It's not that I'm against slow music if that's what you're wondering, but Beethoven surely didn't mean for this music to be played at such tortoise paced speeds. I have heard at least 2or 3 renditions by other pianists of the slow movements and they are all faster. Barenboim surely meant to play these at his own peculiar tempo. Whether to be "iconoclastic" or not I think he misses the mark. Listening to the Waldesntein finale is excrutiatingly frustrating. Playing it more slowly does not add to the emotional ... | I first encountered this on cassette, quite by accident. It later became the background for my work at morning at the easel painting watercolours. But this is no wallpaper music. The technical genius of matching separate recordings of different trumpet parts is surpassed only by Marsalis's bright and lively technique. The masters would be pleased. As for the watercolours, I can now stand before them and see the music's influence on paper. Well worth the listening... |
