| I bought this CD with the full knowledge of Rubinstein's ability to mesmerize worlds of people with his Chopin. His Ballades and Scherzi are no exception. Some pieces are not to my exact tastes but are very mature interpretations which one should expect from such a maestro of the piano. Great composer, great performer, great music. |

| It's very hard to find fault with this recording, but at the same time something's missing. The piano sounds a bit muted, a little hollow, but that's not the problem - from Debussy I'd hope for a little more playfulness, a little more emotional range. Thiollier performs admirably but a little mechanically. On the other hand, this is brilliant music, flawlessly (if blandly) performed. For a budget CD, you can not go wrong. | I prefer my Chopin and Mozart a bit more sober and not overly sentimental, and I absolutely love both his Chopin and Mozart.
For all Egorov has went through, strangely his interpretation was not as profound or dramatic as some other pianists. There is an awareness to his longing, a sensibility that accompanies the loneliness. You won't lose yourself in his music, won't be washed away by emotions, yet this clarity only allows you to feel the surrounding pain more vividly. Certainly a very memorable recording. |

| Mr. Sokolov is THE Pianist. He is a poet with a stand apart from all others in the past and at present. If you have rarely heard his name or think he might be just another classical fully trained pianist, you are mistaken. If you have not heard him play, you have not heard how a piano is an instrument of music. Both this and the other five sets contain pure live recorded accounts of excellent compositions. | INTRODUCTION: My general reservations on Pollini's chilly pianism have already been articulated elsewhere. Chopin's four Ballades contain some of the warmest and most poetic music composed for the piano--in fact, the most perfect condensate of musical and pianistic refinement in the entire piano oeuvre. The odds indicate that Pollini's Ballades wouldn't be a front-runner in the sunshine department. So, is that the case?
