| INTRODUCTION: In his four Ballades, Chopin created a perfect condensate of his epoch-making and infinitely gorgeous piano writing. Bringing out their accumulated greatness is indeed elusive--even to the most accomplished pianists. Even if clearly a great deal more outwardly virtuosic, the four Scherzos make up the ideal coupling, being the other quartet of large-scale one-movement creations in the Chopin oeuvre.

| This CD is an oddball creation. From the looks of it, the very young Wendy Chen is just another bimbette selling her pouty looks more than her artistry. The inside is not reassuring, as we are treated to more photos of Ms. Chen with her head cocked and her lips puckered. The slightly sexually-suggestive title of the disc doesn't help, either.
"They laughed when I sat down to play." Ah, but then you put on the CD, and Ms. Chen blows you away with some great pianism. The Ballads alone are worth the price of the whole thing, ... Read More: |

| I like this album! It opened new worlds for me, of great Chopin interpreters of long, long ago. I bought both volumes of the album by mistake, hoping to get a full album of Alexandre Brailovski's keyboard work. But I'm very pleased with the music. It should be noted I am not a musician of any kind and have a somewhat limited background in classical music. But a friend who is both a professional musician and quite knowledgeable in these matters says the recordings of these artists of bygone days are, well, priceless!! |

| If you are a collector of historic recordings, or an avid Rubinstein collector, than this record is for you. I, on the other hand, am neither, and I had trouble enjoying the Piano Concerto due to the poor sound quality of this 60-year old recording. The sound quality of the remainder of the disc was much better. So, if an "old" sounding record doesn't bother you, I'm sure you'll love it. I'm from the CD generation, and I'm going to look for another version of the Concerto. |

| In my opinion there is no more effective way to ruin a great musical performance than to record it in front of an audience who cannot control their coughs. The first disc starts out with a 1979 live recording of Chopin's first piano/orchestra concerto featuring pianist Krystian Zimerman and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra of Amsterdam. The performance is good, but doesn't allow the listener full concentration,--and therefore not full enjoyment--as a distracting and annoying audience can be heard coughing, sneezing, and clearing their throats even above ...
