Steve Reich's Music for 18 Musicians is a fantastically gorgeous work of art. If you found Steve Reich via Eno, note that this is a bit less "ambient" than much of Brian Eno's work. The hour-long song flows together seamlessly as Reich weaves layers of instrumentation through your ears. However, the music is never repetitive enough to be hypnotic; throughout, the music changes subtly, in very fascinating ways, so that you could probably focus on it for the whole hour and still be interested. Since his Triple Quartet of 1999, Steve Reich has been engaged in a project of loosening up the compositional processes and contrapuntal grids that framed his earlier work. As early as Octet (1979) and Sextet (1984), Reich was situating structural and harmonic changes within unbroken melodic and rhythmic material. The Counterpoint pieces (1982, 1985, 1987) make this concern with continuously resounding texture and dense harmonic space more explicit.

Daniel Variations (2006) delivers probably ... Read More:

Most of the reviewers of this product have been admirers of Steve Reich's work, and I imagine that most people who have read this far will also be fans of the guy, so I hope that nobody will offended if I offer a minority opinion.

I am not an admirer of Steve Reich's work. I am not a fan of minimalist music in general, although I have enjoyed some recordings of earlier Philip Glass (such as the original version of "Einstein on the Beach") for their sheer energy. When it comes to twentieth-century composers, ... Read More:

From Gregorian Chant to Henryk Gorecki (the first living composer to get into the pop album charts), Richard Fawkes' The History Of Classical Music presents the fascinating and informative story of more than a thousand years of Western classical music and the composers who have sought to express in music the deepest human feelings and emotions. Welsh also explains polyphony, sonata form, serial music, and other musical expressions with a text that is illustrated by performances from some of the most highly praised recordings ... I have studied this piece thoroughly over many years. This performance really deserves a B-, but I rounded up to 4 stars. The good: the overall aim of the piece is achieved, but just barely. The bad: for minimalism of this sort, everything has to be perfect and seamless. Sections need to overlap, and all parts need to be absolutely in tune and interlocking. That said, there are numerous issues with one set of instruments playing too fast and others too slow so that the pulses don't match up. There are several intonation problems, especially ... A stoner buddy of mine turned me on to this 40 years (1967) ago and it - Come Out, in particular - blew me away. I bought a vinly copy and later replaced it with this CD. I can't imagine an eclectic CD collection being complete without a copy of this landmark album.

This is certainly a very interesting yet monotone release. So how did I come to hear of Steve Reich? Actually a friend thought it good for me to have a listen to some real minimalistic arrangements instead of hammering 4x4 beats which I tend to listen to very much, so he gave me a copy of this one. I never thought it would be this good, and the remarkable thing about this release is the fact that they've done everything manually which makes it all sound extremly unique (I'd better go check his other releases as well). From hand drums, marimbas, glockenspiel, ... Read More:

Octet and Music for a Large Ensemble are two of my favorite Steve reich works. Octet has lots of low winds and piano, giving it a lot of charm and textural warmth. Music for a Large Ensemble has more of an urgent feel, more of a piercing texture at times, and is also a beautiful piece (one of his best, I think). If you like Reich's earlier style, along the lines of Music for Eighteen Musicians, you will probably like these - Violin Phase is more of a novelty to me, as I am more drawn to Steve's pieces that have more harmonic motion (like the other two I just mentioned). If you've ... Read More:
