| Our class read this book together this year. We loved it!!! It is about a 4th grader named Peter and his annoying brother named Fudge. Peter wins a turtle named Dribble from his friend Jimmy Fargo's birthday party. Fudge is always getting into trouble. Fudge's birthday is a disaster! First, someone wets on the floor and bites the grandma. One child throws up and falls asleep. And another child never stops crying. What will Peter do about his little brother??? | This is the rare instance where I've read the book but haven't seen the movie. You know, some stories are better in book form and some are better in movie form. After reading James and the Giant Peach, I believe it works better as a movie. It has more action than it does ideas, and I enjoyed the illustrations much more than the actual text, unlike Alice In Wonderland or Winnie The Pooh.
Dahl's prose seems a bit clunky in my opinion, but at least it should be easy for kids to understand. It's ugly in form, but ... Read More: |

| I honestly believe in my heart that every American woman from about age 25-35 read this book around the same age I did. Either one of her friends told her about it, the school nurse gave it to her, or her mom bought it and said it would explain things.
This book is occassionally banned by school districts due to its discussion of female puberty and religion. I don't remember it being especially new when I was the age of the characters (Blume sets many of her novels in Princeton, I grew up in same, and we ALL read them). At this ... Read More: |

| Julie Andrews, it is safe to say, is very cool. She told us that the hills were alive in The Sound of Music. James Garner was attracted to her in Victor/Victoria (even when he thought she was a man). More recently, Andrews has held her own next to the Plaza's favorite resident in Eloise at the Plaza and Eloise at Christmastime. Oh, and she was Mary Poppins (and Millie) before Mary Poppins (and Thoroughly Modern Millie) got all trendy with Broadway show(s).

| I have read this countless times since the 4th grade, and it still continues to be one of my favorite books ever. The odd thing is that I remember being severely disappointed to learn this was not a fantasy.
But the real story is stronger, that of a deep friendship that affects a young boy for good and bad. There are so many levels to this book, and thus it becomes clear why these two kids would create a fantasy world for escaping the challenges of the real world. I have a lot of respect for a writer who can take holes, lizards and onions and create an incredible story. This book was amazing. It held my interest from the very first page. The characters were lovable and interesting (I particularly liked Zero), the plot was fast paced and engaging, the writing style was easy to read and follow.
