I first heard about this book in a teacher magazine, and sure enough, it became an instant favorite in my second- and third-grade classroom. This was no big surprise to me as my fourteen young students represent eight different nationalities among themselves! The book has sparked some interesting conversations about feeling different and about arriving in a new country. Any early-grade classroom, but perhaps especially those in multicultural and international schools, should have a copy of this ... Read More:

I lived in Tanzania for two years as a Peace Corps Volunteer. Now that I have children I want to read stories to them about life there. This is the best children's story I have found that accurately depicts life in Tanzania and also tells an engaging story.

Our third grade teacher recommended this book. My son and I read it in one night. It makes you think, feel, laugh and cry.
The questions on the back page help. I think it is a must read!
You should also read its sequel Kim's Diary.

Enjoy and God Bless

You know, there's a reason Frances Hodgson Burnett's, "A Little Princess" is considered a classic. Wait! Come back! I know I'm supposed to be reviewing "Finest Kind" by Lea Wait but just bear with me a second here while I make my point. Ahem. As I said before, there's a reason people love "A Little Princess". There's something wholly entrancing with a tale in which a child grows up surrounded by wealth and privilege only to find their world come crashing down around their ears. The riches to rags tale ... As the title suggests, this book is very much about the pictures. A number of them are uncommon, and a fair handful of those were new to me. (Woo-hoo!) The captions are interesting and Sullivan did point out a few little-known facts - that Helen's eyes were removed and replaced with glass ones, for example - but in my typically nerdy ... That is probably what attracts most people to the books. The vivid, beautiful colors and stylish designs always catch the eye of both children and adults. Then, they fall in love with the charming stories of children's adventures in life. Apt. 3 does not disappoint. I definitely appreciate the fact that the main characters are black children ...
