| Overall I really liked this book. Jane Yolen's versions of 20 fairy tales (many having to do with food) were fun and nicely retold. Some are pretty familiar to us all and other are more obscure. I also liked the offbeat illustrations by Phillippe Beha.
I'm not sure who did the research but what I enjoyed most were the history of the tales and the facts about food in the columns next to the recipes. Did you know that grapes are considered berries and that pumpkins are 90% water? ... Read More: |

I've looked through this book myself and I quite enjoyed the pictures, as this book makes a change from the previous traditional-drawn editions. Dorothy's hair is short, the Scarecrow is fat, Glinda looks french (in fact all the pictures give a bit of a French/European feeling when you look at them) and a few other changes, both a bit funny and interesting. | I found this to be a very charming and captivating story about a Hedgehog learning how to be happy. Children live in a world in which people are always telling them that some way of life is better. This book helps to reverse this impression. It also teaches the power of standing up for yourself and the good that can come from helping others.

| I read these books with my 8-year-old daughter for fun. We play a game where one of us reads aloud and the other gets to make the choices of which path to take. In this volume, the main character is a young White man, and I guess that is a drawback since we don't get to explore the choices women had during the California Gold Rush and we don't learn anything about the Chinese in California.
