Despite the fact that his books feature anthropomorphic mice, Kevin Henkes' characters are always strikingly realistic. Lilly is no exception.

When she gets a COOL PURSE from her grandma, she has a predictably hard time waiting until Show-and-tell... so hard a time that she doesn't wait. And it's confiscated.

Then she - predictably - is upset at her teacher instead of herself. So she writes him a nasty letter... which she repents from when she realizes he doesn't totally ... Read More:

I honestly believe in my heart that every American woman from about age 25-35 read this book around the same age I did. Either one of her friends told her about it, the school nurse gave it to her, or her mom bought it and said it would explain things.

This book is occassionally banned by school districts due to its discussion of female puberty and religion. I don't remember it being especially new when I was the age of the characters (Blume sets many of her novels in Princeton, I grew ... Read More:

Books : Harriet the Spy

Eleven-year-old Harriet M. Welsch experiences stormy
days in 6th grade as a result of her habit/hobby/obsession:
writing down her thoughts and observations in a notebook all during the day. Not just on her after-school Spy Route (when she snoops through windows and even sneaks into private homes to ferret out information about her adult neighbors). Oh no, but during the schoolday in her actual classroom--when she should be concentrating on lessons or doing her work. But for Harriet keeping ... Read More:

I suppose I was looking to be blown away I as I was with the Book Thief.
Although this was a fine novel with a great mystery to keep me turning the pages, I found some of the writing sytle and language hard to get through. The main character grew on me and I really came to love him for his strengths and weaknesses.

In the last few weeks, I've read "Victory Over Darkness" and "The Bondage Breaker" by Neil T. Anderson. Both books are excellent, especially "The Bondage Breaker." At the back of the book are seven steps to experiencing freedom in Christ.

I thought I was living a free life. But I also knew some blockage remained from negative experiences because I had stifled all corresponding emotions. Oh my goodness, what a wonderful release to walk through every bit of the past, renounce any hold the enemy may have kept in those areas, and give ... Read More:

I have read this countless times since the 4th grade, and it still continues to be one of my favorite books ever. The odd thing is that I remember being severely disappointed to learn this was not a fantasy.

But the real story is stronger, that of a deep friendship that affects a young boy for good and bad.

There are so many levels to this book, and thus it becomes clear why these two kids would create a fantasy world for escaping the challenges of the real world. Ironically, it is the time they spend here that allows them to ... Read More:

This was a great series of books. She really keeps you interested and wanting to read the next chapter because each character gets a small piece in each chapter so you really stay engaged. It took me a week to read all four!!

Books : The Mouse and the Motorcycle

Ralph, the mouse, was riding his motorcycle when he fell off the table and into the trash can. He waited an hour. Then Kith came into the story. He saw Ralph and his motorcycle (which was Kith's) and it was bent up. Kith took the motorcycle out, and Ralph climbed up Kith's arm. Later, Ralph was captured by two teachers. They let him go. He was hanging on a vine. An owl saw him and tried to eat him.

I like Ralph because he had a lot of humor. He reminds me of me because he likes to eat. My favorite part was when Ralph's mom thought that Kith ... Read More:
