| I got this book to help my 4 year old class understand the world around them just a little better. 4 year olds are just realizing others have feelings and to care for their friends. This year's group just wasn't getting it. I read this book to them. Afterwards I asked what Peace felt like for them. I got some great answers. | This non-fiction work of Barth's is one of many she has written on the origin of holidays. It is written on a level for children, but with facts that adults may not know, either. Barth exposes many myths about clothing, etc..concerning the Pilgrims and Native Americans one may not know. Except for some minor editorialization regarding religion, this is an outstanding book. |

| Presumably this is aimed at children as a brief overview. Mostly a waste of time for anyone that knows anything about the topic, other than as a quick browse, or a chance to pick up a different creature, beastie, or monster. So this is much more in the vein of a picture book for kids, as far as I can tell. |

| It's hard to be enthusiastic enough about a book like this. I like the subjects (Archeology, Ship Building, historical research, fascinating stories) and the presentation style, but most of all I like how the author makes connections and inspires you to find more information about things that you suddenly feel as if you never appreciated enough. | This is 1 Yankee who really knows her history! I am teacher in NY state and when I took a look at this book in the library, I wasn't too pleased. Rhode Island had more slaves than any other state! Next, the South did not want to secede b/c they wanted to keep slaves, but because they thought they were being taxed unfairly. Northerners didn't give a damn about slaves, and some Northerners kept slaves as well.

| I agree with the previous review that this book was similar to the Magic Treehouse series, but I think this book was even better than those. My six year old daughter and I loved this book. We planned on splitting it up over two nights of reading, but got so involved in the story that we read the whole book in one sitting! Super imformative and the story was woven well into the Ancient Egypt facts!!
