It took place in a big field, on a boat and in his master's home. Buddy was trained to be a seeing eye dog. His master was trained to know how to take care of Buddy. This book is awesome! It was exciting and fun and it had a dramatic ending. |

| I've just started looking through this book and I thought the charts and many of the topics such as Citizenship, Justice, Leadership, Problem Solving, Relationships etc. would be great for my grandsons, but I was quite disappointed with several of the references and people quoted.

| I thought this was an excellent introduction to the Depression years for younger readers. Russell Freedman writes in a straightforward style and nicely avoids contractions ('did not' instead of 'didn't') popping up throughout his text. There are two stories in these pages, the Depression and life in the Thirties and the same years as they relate to children, so there are chapters devoted to 'In and out of school', 'Kids at work' and 'Boxcar kids' for example.

| I'm a big fan of fairy tales and a big fan of the "annotated" series. This one has some unusual features that make it a bit more interesting. First of all, these stories are a decent collection of the well-known and not-so-well-known, so the reader can choose to indulge in something familiar like The Three Little Pigs, or maybe something less familiar, like The Juniper Tree. | All of the books in this series take one personality trait of a famous person and talk about it. The trait they chose for Jefferson was that he liked to eat. The fact that the "feast" happened over several parties as opposed to one meal is not an important enough piece of "fiction" to justify saying that the book is bad. The book does not talk about Slavery. That is covered in the book about Harriett Tubman, which is also a very good book. | My fifth grader loves colonial American and Revolutionary war history. with all the reading she has been doing on the subject, I found this a nice way to provide some projects for a learning portfolio. For someone homeschooling with a curriculum such as Sonlight that focuses a lot on books, this can add some crafts and color to the program. Don't expect that this book will be all you need to cover the time period, it doesn't replace a curriculum or good library books, but it is a great complement for a history program. |
