Chrysanthemum loved everything about her name until she went to school. Her friends teased her about her name. They told her she looked like a flower, and lived in a garden with dirty things. Chrysanthemum started to dread school, and decided she no longer liked her name.

Then Chrysanthemum meets Mrs. Twinkle. Everyone admires Mrs. Twinkle. When Mrs. Twinkle hears Chrysanthemum being teased she informs the class that she will be naming her unborn baby Chrysanthemum. After Mrs. Twinkle's ... Read More:

I loved this book, but had no idea it was for grades 9 and up until after I read it. I looked on amazon.com and wow was I surprised when I found out it was for Young Adults. From my point of view it's not so kosher for kids because there is plenty of descriptive adult elements in it. But nonetheless, John Green is a refreshingly talented and creative story teller. What I liked most was that the characaters were all "smart kids" and Green adds very interesting, intelligent tidbits throughout the story. ... Read More:

While this is a fictional account of self-harm, I felt that it was a fair portrayal of the main character who is attempting to deal with familial issues the best way she knows how. I have read horrendous books that were intended to have the same effect that this story had...and from my reading (so far) this story is the closest that I have found to reality. Yes, Callie has problems...Yes, she hurts herself... but she is not hollow. She is just a normal teenage girl who doesn't know how to cope with the emotions ... Read More:

My grandson thoroughly enjoyed this book. He said it made him laugh a lot and he read it all in one gulp and his stomach felt good at the end.

It is sometimes hard to find things to do with your preteen. They are at an age when they want more independence from mom and dad. This book is a great connection - you can cozy up and read a few selections at a time - it's a great way to have fun, and spend time bonding with your preteen. You can then use the stories, or lessons learned for great conversation pieces for discussion.

SO much better than I expected! The dialogue flowed very well and the characters were all highly realistic. There were some nitpicky things I disliked, though. I think the title was misleading, since they didn't actually go to Birmingham until very late in the story, and to me, it's not the biggest part of the story. (Maybe it should have just been titled 'The Watsons'? Their familial bonds are what the story is about to me.) Another thing that bothered me was the first page, too many similes and metaphors. This is not continued ... Read More:

I just want all parents out there to understand that while "sexually experimenting with other boys" (chapter nine) may be "normal", it can also easily be considered a CRIME for which your son can be prosecuted.

I read this book to my students. But before I had read it myself, I shared it with my students. It was very emotional for me. (I have a cousin listed on the wall. His son was born about 4 months after he died. I could see my uncle walking his grandson there.) The book was a beautiful, moving tribute to all those who have given their lives in Vietnam.
