He is not just a master with the dialogue, but with the mood, setting and gives you a complete rundown of the politics in that small number of pages. | My daughter begged to read this after it was promoted at school as one of the Bluebonnet books of the year. I was concerned by the title so I read the book first. Admittedly the "heroine" Georgina has a tough life and is not treated well by her friends and teachers. However, she is awful to her Mother, mean to her little brother and a pathological lier. | At times it was very difficult to read this true story due to my tears and heart stopping feelings. I think that this book should be required reading for the young people of today to let them know how blessed they are to have what they have. I hope our system has changed enough so that the things this young boy, and the many others in the book faced are not present today. | This book is added to our preschool library as one of our "just in case" type books. If there was to be a traumatic incident that a child experienced, this book would be perfect to use. The 'terrible thing' is not specified, thus it could be used if a child witnesses parental arguing, abuse, an earthquake, etc. Animal characters are indirect and easy for children to relate to, and there are suggestions at the end of the book for adult intervention with the child/ren. |

| I have so many issues with the text of this book. As a picture book it is lovely to look at and has a very satisfying aesthetic. As a story, it is so unfinished that it leaves me cold. I had the chance to ask the author, at a talk, what happens to the man and the monkey after the pageant. She said "nothing, who knows, why does it matter". I understand that in some of her other works, like Because of Winn-Dixie, the readers are older children at an age to deal with ambiguity and either make up their own end, or move on. Explain ... | Wow! I can't believe the people who are giving this book one-star! I absolutely loved it! I found it through Twilight Moms in March, read it and couldn't wait to get to the store to buy City of Ashes. I think the characters are very evolved and have a lot of depth to them and the story is amazing.
I was looking for something to help deal with my Twilight addiction until Breaking Dawn came out and I was so glad to find this series. But I think I just found another addiction! And it helped to ease the pain of Breaking Dawn ... Read More: |
