| What's amazing is that this is a true story, true excerpts from the author's childhood. They are written without fluff and cheese, but the emotion is still strong and real. I like how it is written in the form of individual stories--somehow it makes these events all the more poignant. It's real, harsh, and opens eyes to the lives of migrant workers. |

| The illustrations alone make this book worth purchasing. While it's simply enjoyable you can also use this book to talk about so much, the passage of time and passing of the seasons for a start. We also enjoyed looking at the detail and hidden pictures in the illustrations. |

| I ordered this book because I was looking for some short stories to prepare for a new curriculum we are going to have in HK and I am not disappointed. Not all the stories are "short stories" (some entries are excerpts from novels, poems, etc.) but I can still find a few which have potentials for my purpose. My favourites are "Aunt Millicent" (a comedy), "The Elevator" (a thriller), "An Object Lesson" (Detective story) and "Those 3 Wishes" (A modern fairy tale". | While I do admit that these stories are no longer capable of scaring me, I also understand the fact that...this is a children's book. That being said, if you are not 12 and under, you might find some of the stories rather bland-- especially if you're a serious horror fan.

| I've been reading Asterix since I was a child, and I've never read a better comic. They're clever, silly and have great twists on words. I've picked up bits of history, Latin and enlarged my vocabulary without meaning to. These comics don't get old, even when read and reread. Now my kids and their friends read my Asterix collection and they're as absorbed as my friends and I were. | This collection, like Smoke and Mirrors before it, is both a wonderful introduction to Neil Gaiman and a delightful treat for those who already know him. The short stories collected here are not all brand new (Chivalry, Troll Bridge), but there's some 2006 and 2007 short stories you may not have read before.
Regardless, the tone and style provides a great example of this master writer's skill and range. If you've been wondering why people make a fuss over Gaiman, start here. |
