| Recommended to Parents who can't get their daughters to read. I purchased the Sweep series for my 13 year old daughter in the hopes that maybe she would read. "She hated to read." | My son has recently began wanting more complicated books when we are reading and I found these while searching on Amazon. I purchased them and am very pleased.
The story line is simple but follows a natural, building progression that some of the other "early readers" lack. The short simple chapters have allowed me to introduce a more advanced format to my son and I feel has really enabled him to progress to more complicated story concepts. | This book is about a mother duck that cannot find one of her ducklings. She goes around asking the other denizens of the pond if they have seen it. The fun thing is that, if you look, you will find where the duckling is.
There are few words in this book, so be aware of the reading level (baby-preschool). However, the artwork is very well done, and the fun of having the little reader find the missing duckling on each page makes the whole thing worthwhile. |

| When I was in 5th grade, my English teacher lent me this book after exacting from me a promise to finish writing out my vocabulary word definitions before reading it. I was a good student, but a lazy one, easily bored by things I found repetitive or unstimulating, and it must have been frustrating to listen to my excuses about why I had failed yet again to do my vocabulary lesson. | I've had this book for many, many years, and I'm always struck by the simplicity of the story and the complexity of the illustrations. The lovely black dog in the story is an unsung hero who saves a baby floating away in the rain. I named my black lab Bruno after the dog in this story.
Many of Edward Gorey's stories are too adult or too black for children. But if your child is thoughtful and imaginative, I would recommend this one. This is a must for Gorey collectors. And for the one person in the universe ... Read More: |

| My children (ages 5 and 7) and I adored this book and ended up buying the series and watching the dvd which was also awesome (starring Glenn Close and Christopher Walken). The story is touching, emotional at times and very sweet. The characters are easy to love. |
