My daughter and I had a long car trip this summer in which we listened to a library audio copy of Coraline (charmingly illustrated by Neil Gaiman himself) and absolutely LOVED the story. So, for Christmas, I had decided to give her a beautiful hardbound copy of the book to read together.

UNFORTUNATELY: this graphic hardbound novel is like a comic strip version of the novel. DO NOT BUY THIS UNLESS YOU DON'T WANT TO READ THE BOOK PROPERLY. It would be more suitable as a keepsake or ... Read More:

About a hundred pages into Outlander, the first book of author Diana Gabaldon's unique historical romance series with a time travel twist, I was hooked. In Claire and Jamie Fraser, Gabaldon has created compelling, unique characters, and the sparks from their relationship virtually fly off the pages.

When we last left Claire and Jamie at the end of book three, Voyager, they had survived a shipwreck which had left them in the American colonies. Drums of Autumn opens with the couple preparing ... Read More:

Who can read this DRIVEL? Poorly written, with an almost juvenile writing style. Boring. Predictable. The interactions between the Kahlen and Richard, laughable. They have known each other for, um, one day, and already she has "a secret smile just for him!" Ugh. I kept reading parts of it out loud to my family and LAUGHING! I had to quit after about 100 pages. I am surprised I managed to get that far and shocked that this is a bestseller. Compares in my mind to the Eragon books by Christopher Paolini, except ... I was a bit disappointed with this book as compared with the first two books in the series.
The story line was fun, however, I believe the author could have done more with the main characters. I found it to be mundane after the action and main characters interaction in the first two books.
Found myself doing more skimming than reading.

I am writing to provide a little perspective after reading other reviews of Debt of Bones. I own the book Legends (several wonderful stories by several great authors including Goodkind). If you are familiar with Legends you will know that this is where Debt of Bones was originally published. It was published several years after Wizards' First Rule. While I cannot say definitely I think that Debt of Bones may have been the beginnings of Terry's ideas for SOT. It feels like he was a new writer learning his craft and testing out concepts. ... After a few pages, I was sucked into this story. It's classic McKinley and reminded me a lot of The Blue Sword not only in tone and format, but the main character is named Mirasol, which called Harimad-sol of Blue Sword to mind.

As a classic McKinley story, however, it also has a few frustrating bits. The world McKinley has created is fascinating (like Blue Sword) and I want more of it. There is a lot of time spent on world building, frankly, and it can get a bit heavy.

Much of the book consists of Mirasol's ruminations ... Read More:

198.The Stupidest Angel by: Christopher Moore

Books : The Stupidest Angel
Christopher Moore's The Stupidest Angel CD: A Heartwarming Tale of Christmas Terror is another audiobook to entertain, even at 5 A.M. on the commute into the city. My husband and I have gotten into a habit of listening to audiobooks in the car when we travel to and from work, and when we take little road trips.

Christopher Moore's books seem to be the most addictive for us even with the sometimes dark humor and harsh content. The Stupidest Angel is no exception.

The book is set in Pine Cove, Calif., where the Archangel Raziel is set upon ... Read More:

The Monsters of Templeton traces several weeks in the life of Willie Upton after she arrives in her small hometown unexpectedly, knocked up and disgraced. Shortly after her arrival, her mother drops a bomb on her: Willie's father is not who Willie thought it was, and her real father is closer than she thought. What follows is a couple weeks of Willie tracing her lineage back and forth through illegitimate offspring, slaves, and incestuous relatives.

In Willie's search for her father, the story of Templeton (her hometown) is told in minute, quirky, and gory detail. ... Read More:

This book is tough to read and is more suited to an older audience. I wouldn't hesitate to get it for someone in high school if they have already read The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. But the book is probably more suited to college age and above due to some of the vocabulary and themes the Tolkien presents. There are also a lot of names used by Tolkien, so at times it can be a little cumbersome to keep track of who is who, where they are from, what they did, etc. but if you can keep attention to detail it is worth the effort. For me, this book is the clearest "Catholic work" ... Read More:
