| Hi, this is Ashlynne and I just finished reading a wonderful book. The name of the novel is Heart of a Chief by: Joseph Bruchac. I give this book 5 out of 5 stars.
The main character is a Pennacook boy named Chris who faces several problems and adventures. | Written in the first person,I was about midway when it occurred to me this is fiction, not a personal journal! This young author,whom I'm certain is a woman between two cultures,opens a window and allows us comfortable,middle-aged,white ladies to peer into her life. With the knowledge that we women are more alike than different comes empathy .I'd definitely recommend this for all ages. |

| I read the book "Song of the Trees." I really enjoyedit. It was also kind of sad.
One of my favorite character is Little Man. I lke him because he always dressed like he was going to meet the president. Another charater I like is Cassie because she stuck up for her brothers. And she seemed pitty nice and kind. A last one is Mr.andersen. I like him because he was mean and Cassie and her two brothers beat up on him. | I found this book particularly relevant for my library, which is housed within a Christian school. Children need to know that it is okay to ask questions, it is good to think for yourself, and it is not necessary to follow along blindly. A book like this makes them work out for themselves what they truly believe. |

| Lena and Marie touched my heart with their sad tales of their unfortanite parent battles which they are losing seeing as Lena's mother died, Marie's mother abadoned her, and Lena's dad sexually abuses the poor girl. Their means more then anyone realizes and thats the magic of the story; what friendship can do and whit it can withstand. |

| I thought this book was a very good description of how hard it was to get an education in the South if you were black. They way the way the white children treated the black kids makes me wonder if any education went on. Still, the education was better than what blacks kids received in the black schools so the kids in the family persisted in attending the white schools. The result was a family who went on to university and college. This book tells a pretty full picture of the distress and cruelty of the times. | I have never really understood what separates a young adult book from a plain old adult book. Oh I know there's a certain difference in style of writing, words chosen based on the expected vocabulary of the target audience, but beyond that it's just plots. And who can guess what plot will appeal to who? Some of the books I treasured as a young adult remain favorites today because they're simply good books. But this novel, though marketed and sold for young adults, perhaps even written for them, is one I think can safely be said to appeal to older readers as well.
