Remember, the journey to school integration is both a powerful and beautiful book and a strong reminder of how fresh (should I say present?) discrimination is, and also how the determination and strength to face violence and incomprehension can overcome deep prejudices.
Toni Morrison, (whom I thank every day for opening for me a window into de black world and way of thinking) with her fluent, elegant and sober writing, leads us to remember a time of struggle and advancement into an equal society, ... Read More:

This novel is, in form, a thriller with a classic thriller plot- the fight to prove the innocence of a man accused of a crime he did not commit. (Alfred Hitchcock used this plot in a number of his films, and "Intruder in the Dust" was itself made into a very good film by Clarence Brown in 1949, only a year after its publication). Faulkner takes this basic plot and uses it to explore the problem of racism in America's Deep South; Harper Lee was later to take a similar plot, and use it for a similar purpose, in ... Read More:

Rooftop is another excellent book by Mr. Volponi. I'm very shocked there is only review for this amazing book.

Once again Mr. Volponi is able to capture the harsh reality of inner city life without being preachy or condescending.

Clay is arrested for smoking pot while his cousin Addison is a crack dealer. Both attend Daytop, which is a day treatment program to help teens stay away from drugs and make better choices. Clay struggles to stay clean and tries to get his GED. Meanwhile, Addison has a ... Read More:

While I happen to work with Black students (only 1 white student) I know that Black children go through racism on a daily basis, more than any other racial group. However, even my 8yr. old Black students are aware and have said aloud there ARE Black, Latino, etc. racists. I was disappointed again to see a book where only white males are the racists, not a Latino man or a Black female. It was nice the text said any1 can be racist, but the illustrations did not support this.

This book is about the old south, a place of deep-seated segregation and racial bias. It is told through the eyes and voice of a lightly educated white boy named Jeremy whose father despises blacks. Yet, the boy clearly has not had the race hatred deeply ingrained into his persona, as he tries to be friendly and feels bad when the whites mistreat a black man (Josias) for simply stating that he has a job. His father beats Jeremy for simply talking kindly to Josias. The time context is that of the 1930's when unemployment was high, ... Read More:

I read this book in junior high and loved it. It held my attention and was one of my favorite reads. As a young person concerned with inequities throughout the world this book fed my desire for knowledge and inspired my determination to make the world a better place.

The title is promising, but misleading. "If a Bus Could Talk" implies an entertaining story for the beginning reader; but, the concept is lost as the story drags from the first few sentences. The gimmick of the driverless bus is mishandled, and one soon wonders why the author thought it necessary add a gimmick to a true story that is inherently interesting when skillfully told. One might speculate that someone early on criticized the book as being a Civil Rights manual for young adults rather than a picture book for children; hence, the story ... Read More:
