| This book is worth the price just for the sample software alone. But even more importantant, it is a provides information on programming Microsoft windows that is not available elsewhere. It only covers the Windows 3.1 API, and is somewhat dated. It does not describe the current .NET development, for example. But even if you are a .NET programmer, there are things done here you cannot do there. Microsoft has hidden a lot of their programming features, and this book tells how to unlock them. ... | Teaches you nothing. Fell apart in my hands before I even was finished reading. Very poor editing and writing for that matter. If it was 1/3 of the price would probably give it three stars, for that much money one could expect much more than that. |

| One shelf in my bookcase looks like a zoo with all those animals on the cover. I appreciate the books of O'reilly very much. But this particular book is really disappointing which is reported already many times. But the rating is still 4 star at this moment which is way too high. And I'm writing about the April 2006 edition. Too many errors, no complete code, examples of older (too old, and deprecated) php versions, layout problems, etc. etc. I really don't get it how they can produce a book like this. |

| Computers do one basic job, they process data. Often, you do not have control over the output format of the data, but the stuff you want in in there somewhere. So you capture the output to a file, and then chop and hack at it with a text editor to get the data you want in format somewhat like you want.
You can either spend the rest of eternity with a text editor or get these guys, and learn a bit to instruct them to do totally boring but useful drudgery. And perhaps learn about regular expressions and pattern ... Read More: |

| I purchased this book a few days ago, and as soon as I read the first chapter, I realized that I needed to read the entire book as quickly as possible. This is a wonderful book, and parts of it truely invoked a state of "nerdvana" in me!

| The product was great. I ordered this book for class, but then the professor told us that they switched books. So, I will keep it for future personal use but can't say I have actually used it yet. I have looked through it and feel that I could learn from it very easily, there are pictures to show where things are located in the window. |

| I'm a Macintosh tech. Just perusing the excerpt of this book available on Amazon, I found a couple errors. First, he says that pressing the power button will bring up the Shut Down dialog. This is only true of laptops and certain very old Macs which had the power button on the keyboard. All current non-laptops will by default just go to sleep if you press the power button.
He then recommends the keystroke combination "CTRL-OPTION-ESC" as a way to shut down your Mac if it is frozen. This too is incorrect. To begin ... Read More: |

| This book was well written for its time but Google no longer uses the formulas found in this book. Any book written before August 2005 should be considered out of date at this point. At that time Google introduced the concept of 'Quality Score' and that changed things quite a bit. Google also recently (December, 2007) changed the way it analyzes the associaton of keywords, ads, CPR, and site content. So the basic concepts of this book are fine but the specifics have moved on. | Even though the third edition is showing its age - it covers kernel version 2.6.10, which is terribly old - in my opinion this is still the best book on the subject.
Generally, it is not possible to create an up to date tutorial for programming the Linux kernel, since it changes constantly. SO, the key is to introduce the reader to the way of thinking necessary in order to understand and develop for the kernel. I think this book succeeds marvelously. |
