I agree that the american church has a lot to do with power trips as well as being hung up on performance/entertainment, etc but I was left wondering why this book doesn't address the role of pastors, teachers, evangelist, or other servant type offices in the church, etc. This book leaves me with the impression that one should live a christian life outside of any type of any biblical order of authority.

I have to say the beginning of this book gave me a big warning that the writing was going to be very elementary and to top it all of a sappy love story. I like love stories which is why I picked this book up, but the writing was horrible! I can't believe this is a best selling author. I remember a few year back I read the notebook and a walk to remember and I at least liked those. I was disappointed and I wish he would have done a better job selling the reader this story.

It was difficult to decide what was more disappointing: the poor narrative or the incredibly poor knowledge of the history in general, and of the region Ms. Brooks writes about in her "People of the Book". Since a lot has been said about the former in other reviews, I will comment on the latter.

On p. 67 you will find a hilarious sentence ending with "...,yet following the forms of Petrarchan sonnets that had been carried inland from Diocletian's court on the Dalmatian coast." Diocletian retired ... Read More:

The book is very well written, but I just kept asking myself what was the point of 500+ well-written pages about characters that I found to be fairly cliche, and not a lot happens. In other words, I found the overall book to be just self indulgent: "here - look how well I can write about nothing in particular!".

Full disclosure: I grew up in Brazil and mostly studied there, so the characters in this book felt a lot like the middle class marxists that I met in high school and college. Maybe if you're meeting ... Read More:

Books : The Darkest Evening of the Year
I've enjoyed Deat Koontz novels in the past, but this one was disturbing on so many levels. I'm disturbed that someone could even create this storyline. A woman who burns people down in their home for no apparent reason and wants to kill her Down's syndrome child? What kind of psycho thinks up this stuff? This book was depressing and disturbing due to the 2 characters killing or wanting to kill their own children. Just awful...I only read to the end in hopes that good would triumph over evil. There is a lot of senseless killing ... Read More:

Too many things in this book did not ring true. A mother warming a bottle for a baby at night in 1929? A woman at the brink of poverty and near starvation throwing away a fresh killed raccoon? Besides the hard to buy aspects of this novel, there was no character to embrace. No one was likeable or real enough to hate. This is the worst book I have ever read set in appalachia.
