In 1974, I gave this to my then seven-year-old son for Christmas - a time for "Giving." I let several days pass and then asked him if he had read the book. He had, so I asked him if he liked it. He said he did, so I asked him what he liked about it. He told me he was glad the tree was still there enough for the man to sit on because the man needed a good friend. Out of the mouths of babes, I thought. I remember stroking his head and saying, "You're right, he did. I'm glad, too, that he had ... Read More:

I absolutely loved the book, 90 MINUTES IN HEAVEN by Don Piper. The book was recommended by a co-worker, who is also a Christian. I am so glad that I read it. My mother passed away 2 years ago and my father preceded her 24 years prior. Also that when my time time comes, I will be reunited with them. This gives me a lot of hope, as I continue to go through the grieving process. I am convinced that they are together along with their siblings, aunts, uncles, parents who preceded them in death. This ... Read More:

Books : World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War
It's rare that I come across a book that I just can't put down, but this was one of them. It is organized like a series of short stories, and each one was so vividly realized that I wanted to know more about that vignette's character. Together, the stories paint an incredibly detailed and believeable picture of what such a conflict might be like. So much so that I found myself occasionally caught in the reality of the book's world when I wasn't reading it. Handled properly, this could be adapted into ... Read More:

The Hemmingses of Montecello: An American Family by Annette Gordon-Reed is a fascinating look into the strange black/white family constellations that emerged under the weight slavery during the American Revolutionary period. Providing a glimpse into southern patterns of interracial mixing during 18th and early 19th century, it illimunites the ways in which standard race relation practices differed during the Antebellum and Jim Crow periods of time. These things, taken together with the interesting individual ... Read More:

I absolutely adored Robinson's previous novel, Gilead -- thoughtful, thought-provoking, slow moving in a wonderful, wistful, fulfilling way. Home, which is set at the same time and with the same characters as Gilead, just told from a different perspective, is a disappointment. The main character, Glory, can't hold a candle to the narrator of Gilead, John Ames. Robinson seems to have lost her voice with this novel, or maybe she couldn't find a voice for Glory, who seems not well defined and thus not very interesting. ... Read More:

At first, when I started reading this book, it completely bored me. The story line consisted of fluff, and was obviously copied from other popular series. The characters were boring, and unoriginal. The first few chapters were HORRIBLE. However, I forced myself to read this book because I kept thinking it would get better. Towards the middle-end of the book, it started getting better. The writers seemed to have realized that readers needed more substance and kicked it up a notch. The characters started getting depth ... Read More:

I figured out why I don't like the endings of Stephenson's novels. Like Tolkien, the main work here isn't the story, but the Universe. I have to say that this universe is certainly as compelling as Middle Earth, if not more. If he wanted, there are certainly a few more novels that could be written around the Mathic World.

This book was slow to get rolling, but once I started reading, I couldn't put it down.

If you're about to embark on this behemoth (890 pages), don't forget about the glossary in the ... Read More:

In any case, that's what I tell people who ask me which book is my favorite: this happens more often than you'd think, as I work in a bookstore.
I first read Infinite Jest in the middle of high school: it was assigned reading for one of my classes [an optional class, but I'd thought the book was interesting, and the teacher who taught that class had given me a hearty recommendation]. I read it during every waking moment I could, straight through, for three weeks: flipping back and forth between footnotes and endnotes, starving, wanting ... Read More:

Jhumpa Lahiri is a writer's writer. These stories are very romantic about missed loves. She uses stream of consciousness, changes of point of view, description, storytelling, and other writing techniques very well. I am amazed at her style.
She writes what she knows. She is a Bengali immigrant. Her characters and stories reflect that heritage. Her stories contain culture but are not limited to the culture. She is describing the human condition that is universal to all: A father who is trying to make a new life and trying to make up to a daughter ... Read More:
