| I read this in a state of agitation and joy. It gets off to a quick start and has a high level of suspense. For myself, I never felt any compassion for the child. Instead, I identified with the mother and hoped for the death of the little monster from start to finish. What it all means, I can't say. I read it as a parable of a kind. | I have talked with my high school students about the fact that although there are defining moments in life, we should not let one moment define who we are for the rest of our lives. This is a great story to exemplify this point! Although drug use and sales are important components of the novel (and serve to attract the attention of adolescent readers), drugs are not glorified, which is an important point that parents and educators should be aware of if asked to defend this book choice. | As a new mother myself, I was so excited to find a book all about a mother trying to find a job to help support her new family. And of course, as I came to the end of the book, I was disappointed to find that Edwina decided that being at home was the only true job for her. BUT... I love reading this book to my little boy. The pictures are so beautiful and captivating and the rhymes make it such a fun read. Despite the final message - which isn't really that bad - I had to give this book 5 stars. |

| This is a basic cumulative tale. Walter finally jumps so high he falls through the floor, and as he goes on more and more residents of his apartment building fall with him, down and down in a rhyming fashion.
Eventually Walter wakes up - just in time for his upstairs neighbor to fall on top of him. The absurdly calm quips everybody makes as the whole building falls in on top of them are worth reading all by themselves. I will note that this is a very long, pretty involved book. | The influence of Judy Blume's opera supra on her young audience has been widely, if perhaps inadequately, debated. And certainly Blume has never been one to shy away from controversy, and her children's literature has generally taken a "contrarian" or "progressive" perspective on most given issues. What makes her an interesting--if not exactly uplifting--author is her ability to render with tremendous realism the perspective of children and early adolescents on the world they live in.

| Frank Asch is on my entering kindergartener's Summer Reading List and I (we) can certainly understand why. His stories are gentle and cute and wonderfully illustrated.
In Moongame, Bear learns how to play hide and seek. And when Little Bird goes home, he continues playing with the moon. At first, the moon finds him hiding in a hollow tree trunk.
