Books : Moominpappa at Sea (Puffin Books)
I was getting to know a song by Charles Trenet, one about a rained-out fairground populated by semi-human monsters, and it flashed on me that it reminded me of one of the Moomintroll stories that had made a fine, somewhat creepy, impression in childhood. Turned out I was remembering "The Hemulen Who Loved Silence" from "Tales from Moomin Valley". That story, proved to have indeed featured a rained-out fairground -- well, not just rained out but spectacularly destroyed by flooding, something that ... Read More:

Books : Rooster's off to See the World
I used this book for a story time with a rooster theme. It is a counting book that teaches the concept of addition and subtraction. Rooster sets off to see the world. Along the way he meets two cats, three frogs, four turtles, and five fish. Since Rooster has made no plans for food or shelter, as night falls his traveling companions go home. The book is illustrated with Carle's usual large, gorgeous collages. It worked very well with a group of forty preschoolers.

In The Member of the Wedding, Carson McCullers captures the lyricism, melancholy, and wonder that animate the young southern protagonist's mind, and comments sagely on the hardships of maturation. That pivotal time of life when one transits from childhood into adulthood is brought to life in all its despair and disillusionment.

Unfortunately, Frankie is not a terribly likeable character, and the author does little to steer empathy toward her in the action that unfolds in the story.

Othello by William Shakespeare

"Othello" is a magnificent piece of literary work. The emotion Shakespeare can bring out of you is truly amazing. The plot has many moments of uniqueness and suspense. Kindle edition is my favorite.

Beloved / 0-452-28062-1

Beloved is not for everyone (most books aren't), but if you cherish the tradition of rich symbolism given to us by such masters as Hawthorne and Poe, you may well love Beloved.

Beloved tells the languorous story of the set-upon Sethe, an ex-slave who has endured the worst hardships life can offer. Having lost a child, she feels deeply burdened with the guilt of the death, her feelings of failure as a mother, even her regret that she could not procure a more elaborate grave marker for her dear baby. ... Books : The Elephant's Child (Warne Children's Classics)
This poor little elephant gets spanked by each parent, and all relatives, even different species for asking questions. I haven't had to spank my children yet and I certainly wouldn't do it so often, especially not for questioning things.

Books : Babette's Feast and Other Anecdotes of Destiny
It's a fact that the best stories of all are those that nowadays are told mainly to children. No grown-up author would dare to invent a story like "The Snow Queen", "Thumbelina" or "Beauty and the Beast", and few would be able to.
If any writer comes close to the unforced magic of those stories no-one ever had to write, it must be Isak Dinesen. Sadly her output of fiction was small: this book, "Seven Gothic Tales", "Winter's Tales", "Last Tales", and her novel, the curious "Angelic Avengers", not quite a parody but not exactly serious, an entire book written ... Lots of fun to read if you love plays on words and have some understanding of the Roman Empire, and classic literature. The comic book form makes it appealing to young readers as well, and may inspire them to look further into historical events parodied here.

Books : I Know What You Did Last Summer
This book bears little resemblance to the slasher film that starred Sarah Michelle Gellar and Jennifer Love Hewitt in 1997. Four teenagers involved in a hit-and-run accident that killed a small boy find mysterious notes that imply that someone, somewhere knows about the accident and might expose their involvement (the four made a pact to keep quiet since there were presumably no witnesses). It's the characters' varied reactions to the notes that keeps the plot running; I figured out who it was before the end of the book, however.
