This follows the play 99% of the time - every once in a while a word is substituted or a phrase turned around, but that's it. My students had no problem following the play. In fact, they prefer the taped reading over reading aloud in class. I'm in a Title I school with a high percentage of behavior problems and this was a "God send." The students listened much better with the taped reading.

The actors are animated and match the personalities of the characters. I recommend it highly.

The summer the swans come to the pond by the Godfreys' house, teenage Sara is feeling neverendingly cranky. It seems like her pretty older sister Wanda is always poking fun of her, her Aunt Willie who's raising them is always on her case, and nothing about her looks or personality seems right.

Worst of all, there's Charlie, Sara's mentally challenged younger brother. It seems like she can never get a moment away from him, not even to see the swans.

One night, Charlie slips out ... Read More:

The Red Badge of Courage is told through the perspective of a young man from the North named Henry Fleming or "the youth" as Crane calls him often. Reluctantly sent on his way from a small farm in the North, Henry excitedly signs up for the army and is eager to fight his first battle against the South. Henry finds out a lot about himself and matures quite a bit from the first battle. During the first battle, Henry flees the fight and is ashamed of himself for a while. I went into Billy Budd expecting fully unique characters, dynamic adventure scenes, amusing-to-analyze homoeroticism, and original themes. What I got was a flat, uninspired narrative that would have been furiously marked in red by any high school English teacher for its excessive description and dull prose. Melville, what the heck!?? I go from a breathtaking adventure novel to this yawn-inspiring allegorical novella?

When Moby Dick indulges in diversions, it's like humoring a genius uncle who interrupts ... Read More:

When this book came out I was in high school and I thought, that's all we need, yet another book about racism and a small southern town..I mean how many books can be written on this subject? I recently sat down and read this book, it's quite a page turner, but still it's a one trick pony..on part Harper Lee, two parts John Grisham. Granted, Paris Trout, is a racist monster, conjured up from Redneck Hell, but he is a total caracture, it's like the author read To Kill a Mockingbird and said, I'm going to make my cracker worse, ... Our theater group decided to do this play this season. I'm ashamed to say I had not heard of it before and was a little dubious about it as a result. Boy, was I in for a shocker! It's a great, great play, full of humanity and pathos and humor and insight. I'll have seen it almost 20 times by the time our run is over and I know I'll wish I could have seen it more times. Everytime I watch it, I love it more and get more out of it.

This is the story of a young white man and the two older black men who work for his family in South Africa. ... Read More:

Really, if books like this were read more often in schools, I bet bullying would decrease. This is a great show of what happens when we treat people badly for being different from us and just how the underdog will rise again. For a children's book, it is surprisingly complex and all the more powerful for the story Yashima weaves. Apparently this was based on personal childhood experiences of Yashima and I find it more than impressive he managed to put them all into literature. It also shows the way of another culture, thus allowing us a little much-needed cultural understanding. ... Read More:
