I generally do not review classics, because I find it impossible to adequately review a genuine classic with the necessary brevity. However, I plan on giving my opinion at some point on books with conflicting Amazon reviews, and it occured to me that readers ought to have a touchstone by which to assess my credibility. There are two types of books which a wide swath of readers may be presumed to have read and so may function as touchstones: popular bestsellers and classics. I made a choice from ... Read More:

Books : Man for All Seasons (Brodies Notes)
Even for a woman infertility is a difficult topic to discuss let alone for a stranger about another man's wife. Sir Thomas More's profundity of agony surfaced when he spoke of birth and death in same breath before his impending death. But an unwary reader could have easily missed this passage. There is so much subtle nuiance of description of conducts and gestures packed in this short drama that I'd have to consider re-reading, seeing a play and a movie version.

124.Killing Mr. Griffin by: Lois Duncan

Books : Killing Mr. Griffin
I would advise one to not read the book Killing Mr. Griffin by Lois Duncan. I had to read this book for school and didn't find it appealing. I disliked this book because it was unrealistic and inadequately written. Killing Mr. Griffin is also impractical and somewhat offensive. Most teenagers would not go to the point of killing their teacher because of strict rules and unfair teaching; because of this one never really believes what is going on. Lois Duncan isn't really making the reader believe what is happening. The characters ... Read More:

Whenever we have guests over who are willing to read books to our kids (relatives and close friends!) we always put this one in the stack. It's such a fun book to read outloud, and fun to listen to others read it for the first time as they can't help but laugh as they turn through it.

We'll save it for our kids to read to their own some day.

Books : Jacob Have I Loved (Puffin Books)
Every time I read this I am amazed at its honesty and harshness. The main character is a girl to be pitied, even as she is strong. I've heard people complain that so many characters are villainized, but that is because Louise is viewing (with surprising fairness) them through her own eyes as she learns to rely upon herself for her own happiness. Along the way, things are revealed to her, against her will, that not everyone is sorted into the concrete concepts of good and evil.

This is a subtle, beautifully written book about the ... Read More:

Books : King Lear (Macmillan shakespeare)
Ok - it's Shakespeare: points awarded. But I found myself loving the word play immensely. I was scratching notes in the columns - started my own word count when I found patterns... and then (as this was read for school) went head-first into the analytical essay to be written. Oddly - the instructor now has us working on a research paper which asks, "Did Shakespeare write Shakespeare?"
And a NOTE: I always wait to read any prologues or introductions AFTER I've read a text. I don't want the "authoritative voice" in the intro influencing my ... Read More:

Well, I am not a fan of Rick Santorum or the religious right but don't be turned off by the fact that this is written by his wife. This book is excellent at teaching morals in a comprehensive and fun way. There is nothing preachy or what I would consider religious but just straightforward healthy morals taught through excellent stories. Don't give it a second thought and just buy it.

As a retired preschool/ daycare administrator I never hesitate to say that McCloskey is one the all-time great writers . Lentil has always been one of the best books to read at story time . You can't go wrong with buying this story for your favorite 4 or 5 year old, but even my 9 year old grandsons love this tale, and it got them interested in playing a harmonica!
