| Unlike most students, when I read this novella in 8th grade I actually liked it. We were required to read a book in a genre we ordinarily avoided. I chose the western genre, which to this day I dislike.

| I loved this book when I was younger and found its characters wonderfully lovable and memorable. I think I will buy it so I can read it again, the pleasurable memories are so strong. I would certainly recommend this book for a young literature class (which is where I found it) or just for enjoyment. It is a fine piece. |

| For a Civil War unit, this picture book has mature pictures, which are beautiful. A black teen Union soldier saves a white soldier, they hide, then are found and taken away. The Confederates hanged Pinkus (the Black teen) and imprisoned the White teen. The White teen survived, and the book is a true story passed down through oral history of his family. A teacher may want to use this powerful and moving story for any age students. |

| I was a little disappointed that the book did not have any reading comp. questions to help you follow thru with what you had read. The book itself is full of great facts and events, but I felt it would have been better if they would have added some review or comp questions. |

| My middle school daughter loves all the Genevieve Foster history books. As a homeschooler free to choose her own curriculum, she says the Foster books are the only history books she will use. As her teacher/mom, I say they're all she needs for history. |

| I havent researched as to whether or not The Matchlock Gun is a challenged book because it might not be PC, but putting that aside for a moment, this is was one of my all time favorite books as a kid. I still remember our teacher reading a little bit of it each day....and not being able to wait for the next day to hear more.

| I am a 10 year old and I like this book because it teaches me about Pedro's journey with Christopher Columbus. Pedro tells us what he did while sailing with Christopher Columbus. Take for example the time he tricked someone else into swabbing the deck while he sat back and watched. Also, the prayers written in the book gave me a mind movie. I can imagine myself there with Pedro on the wooden bed on the ship with my hands together, saying a prayer. I would recommend this book to other 10 year olds. They'll find it interesting. |
