My son used this book as a reference for a science project that involved raising spadefoot toad tadpoles. This is a picture book with a very simple story, but the excellent illustrations depict the toad's lifecycle and unique habitat. We have enjoyed watching the spadefoot toads for years. They appear in droves after big summer storms, lay their eggs, and disappear almost immediately.

Books : The Frog (Animal Life Stories)
My 3 1/2 year old daughter enjoys everything about bugs, turtles, frogs, etc. so this is a great book for her. Nice color pictures with good explanation of the life cycle of a frog. Only disappointment was I expected the "library binding" I purchased to be hardcover (like at the library!), but it was just a paperback. A hardcover would have been better as it opens flat and lasts much longer.

At a time when quieter books for children are sadly few and far between, reading Ellen Jackson's EARTH MOTHER is especially rewarding. The illustrations illuminate her lyrical text, with phrases such as "a robe fringed with falling rain" and "placed a piece of summer in a flower's seed." Earth Mother smiling and walking on with no verbal response to the complaints from Man and Frog is as it should be, and my 4-year-old nodded along approvingly. She already knows, as Jackson does, that Earth Mother knows best. ... Read More:

Max Velthuijs' bold colors and serene compositions give his books an appealing simplicity. Here, Frog finds that it's hard being an amphibian in the winter, especially when compared to his non-amphibian friends, Duck, Pig, and Hare. It's a nice vehicle for teaching animal types, and the pictures are compelling; however, the last half of the story has a strangely dissonant tone. I was expecting Frog to somehow adapt to the cold; instead, he winds up half-frozen while looking for wood. His animal ... Read More:

Books : Adventures of Old Mr. Toad
Reading these books was fun for me as a child but I never enjoyed them as much as Beatrix Potter. The english author wrote in a more mature, fairy tale style that children could still relate to while these books have more of a folk tale background. However, some of Burgesses books are better than this one and I urge you to read Reddy Fox instead of Mr Toad.

With authentic illustrations, this book is an excellent introduction to frogs and wetland habitats. It lends itself well to primary classroom studies about the food web and ecosystems.

Books : Toad on the Road (Step Into Reading: A Step 1 Book)
While this book is apparently popular with preschoolers (see other reviews), I can only give it a Three-Star grade as a practice reader. The main problem in my opinion is that there is just not enough story here to justify buying the book for a child to practice with, unless you were going to get it for them as a preschooler, and then let them read it later, or else use it with younger siblings.

The artwork is colorful and bright, and there is rhyming, but the silly story (a good thing), isn't one that's ... Read More:
