This different view of the Vietnam War is filled with adventure, the danger, and the hardwork on the part of a young soldier and a German Shepard. The author's method of telling the story from two points of view adds to the knowledge of the war experience. What a surprise to learn that the dogs were not brought home again after their time in Vietnam! Luckily Cracker's fate was positively different.

Yellow Star is excellent. The book is written in first person, from the authors interviews of her aunt who was one of the only children who survived the Lodzer Ghetto. I was deeply moved by her writing, not only as an avid reader, but as a person who lost an extensive family in Lodz during WW2 .

This book is recommended reading fr anyone who wants to now what happened during those horrific times.

The protagonist, a thoroughly spoiled youth named Robin, is rendered lame by a disease. Mercifully, and mysteriously enough, a monk comes to his abandoned home, picks him up and brings Robin to a monastery. At this gentle place, as the monk guides him, Robin learns self-discipline and many kinds of practical skills. It is a redemption, though Robin's spirit is still broken about his lame legs.

A wartime crisis comes about and Robin is the only one who can deliver vital information to his father, a lord ... Read More:

Books : These Happy Golden Years (Little House)
I love the Laura books, I can remember my mother reading them to me when I was young. Since then, I've read then again and it never ceases to delight me.
My only complaint though, is that the illistrations are pathetic. They don't even look real, so I had a hard time seeing Laura as a real person. For me, when I see lifelike drawings, it really makes get in touch with their character. The drawer, Garth Williams, is someone I wouldn't want to be doing my book! I like the illistrations for The Caroline Years. Oh well...still ... Read More:

To be perfectly honest, I've never been a huge fan of the whole medieval thing (beyond blatant fantasy). But I love Avi and I feel this is well-deserving of its Newberry. It keeps this low-key, almost grave, aura all the way through. Crispin's adventures are a lot of fun, and it fits into his world of serfdom.

The characters are great, as well. Avi has always done marvelous characters. They're realistic, not always wild, but fun and loveable and most of all believable.

Plenty of adventure and great writing.

Books : In the Hand of the Goddess (Lionness Quartet)
The Hand of the Goddess is the second book in the Song of the Lioness series by Tamora Pierce. I would recommend reading them in order. Even though the book touches on some events in the previous book, there is just not enough detail book of those events to skip them. Many of them are integral in seeing the development of Alanna "Alan" over the years.

This book follows Alanna in her teen years while she is learning to be a squire and then a knight. She is involved in a war and is afraid of her upcoming 18th birthday and the "ORDEAL" that ... Read More:

Books : A Little Princess: The Story of Sara Crewe
I know there are probably a lot of people that would gag on the sugary sweetness of this book, but as a book for little girls it is absolutely enchanting. Even as an adult I still adore its sweet little heroine and her bravery and goodness.

The story is about Sara, a pampered little girl who travels to New York to attend school whilst her father does his work. She begins as the gem of the school, the administration falling over her, or more precisely Daddy's money. Then tragedy strikes, and Sara is left as poor orphan shuffled to the attic with the ...
