I listened to the book on CD and once again found the narrator to be excellent. Gerard Doyle has a wonderful ability to bring characters to life with this wide range of voices. In regards to the book itself, I found that The Land of the Silver Apples, while not quite as captivating as The Sea of Trolls, is still a most worthy sequel. Jack's beautiful but spoiled sister, Lucy, is revealed to be a changeling. Jack sets out for the land of the silver apples (the elf kingdom) to win Lucy back and ... Read More:

I am so sick of this book! My twin boys have been fascinated with this story for two years now. We are swimming in books here at home, but month after month this one continues to find its way to the evening "cuddle up with a book" time. The lack of words has encouraged a lot of sound effects, and there is just enough animosity between the knight and dragon to make it a little bit scary. Despite the failure at destroying each other, the two ultimately become business partners. The example is sufficiently ... Read More:

This is one of the most interesting books in the series. The series is fantasy, and I recommend it to grades 2-4. This is great for kids and it gives you facts about what or where they are near. This is probably one of the best series books I have ever read.

This was my 8th grade son's summer reading. He could not stop reading it and it caused him to initiate a lot of conversation with us about the holocaust. Since it was from the perspective of a girl his own age, he really identified with it.

When my son was in elementary school, he did not like reading, but this book (and the other two in the series) totally captured his attention. They're funny, imaginative, and just the right level of difficulty for a child who's not a great reader. He's in his 20's now, but the mention of these books still brings a smile to his face.

This story shows the kindness of children when un-blemished by societies views. The adults are tarnished with opinions based on years of living in a beautiful town. But one asks the question. Who is really beautiful? Fritz with his shaggy mane and brave kind heart, or the horses with gracefull necks and hearts of fear without sacrifice?

This wonderful adventure with a Japanese poet was added to our collection just in time. An article ran about him in National Geographic, and my eldest son would not have had a clue who he was if he had not read this book. I think it is delightful how Mary Pope Osborne uses these texts to expose children to places, ideas and situations that might not otherwise be accessible to them. Definitely pick up this title, and if you haven't already done so, buy the rest as well!

The story of a 'frightful little girl', whose point of view changes as she discovers the secrets of her new surroundings.
A well-written story at times, but it definitely had its draggy moments. It seemed to promise more than it delivered(I expected more of a fantasy tale, along the lines of 'The Chronicles of Narnia'.)
The characters were well-developed, though Colin kind of took over what had been 'Mary's story' toward the end.
Perhaps not the best 'classic children's lit' out there, but it shows how life was at the ... Read More:

I heard about the series on NPR and knew it was something my 9 year old would love. Come to find out that I love it too! My daughter and I both love the storyline and the premise behind the series with finding clues, learning about history and interacting via the website. Great for all ages, fun way to engage with your kids and great educational opportunity.
