I usually love all historical fiction/fairy tale retellings, but Hush was a serious letdown for me.

The beginning was wonderful. The plot was exciting and fast-paced, and I found myself really wanting to know what would happen next. As the book progressed, however, I felt my attention wander. The last three quarters of the book are so depressing that it is almost a chore to battle through the endless pages. Since nothing happy ever happens to the main character, her life becomes an endless ... Read More:

Christopher Grey's Leonardo's Shadow is the story of Giacomo, the servant of genius Leonardo da Vinci. However, this life is not as glamorous as it might seem; Leonardo is desperately poor, being two years behind on his largest commission, the Sistine Chapel, and the Duke of Milan refuses to pay until the work is complete. This leaves Giacomo to plead with merchants to extend their non-existent credit for food (Leonardo is a strict vegetarian) and fuel.

At first glance, the narrative's device of ... Read More:

This review is based on the 1982 edition. This book traces the Holocaust from early anti-Jewish teachings, the emergence of racial anti-Semitism, the rise of Nazi ideology, the decision to murder the Jews, the implementation of the Holocaust, rescue attempts, Jewish resistance, theological and philosophical implications, etc. Bauer soundly repudiates any notion of the German death camps being erected in German-occupied Poland because of the presumed anti-Semitism of the local population (p. 210). It was simply a matter of ... Read More:

The Weedflower is a great, realistic, fiction book about a Japanese girl named Sumiko raised on a farm in California. She is the only Japanese girl in her class and is always being teased. Especially after the Pearl Harbor tragedy, she was thought of as a spy like the rest of the Japanese people in America by most citizens. Also as the suspicion grows about spies, Sumikos' family finds that they're being moved to an internment camp in one of the hottest deserts in the USA. The old life they had is now just a memory. Then Sumiko ... Read More:

The theme of this book, in my opinion, is to show what the life of Eleanor might have been like in 1136. Eleanor was a real person. This story is marked as fictional, but there are parts and facts in this book that are non-fictional. There are also pictures, and a family tree in the back of the book.
main characters name physical description and character analysis:
The main character's name is Eleanor. Eleanor is a non-fictional character. In 1137, when she was fifteen, she became Queen of France. At 32, she became Queen ... Read More:

Books : Behind Rebel Lines: The Incredible Story of Emma Edmonds, Civil War Spy
Disguised as a union soldier, Emma would risk her life for her country. Emma Edmonds was born in Saint John, Canada in 1840. When she was sixteen years old she ran away to the United States. When she was twenty one, President Lincoln made a request for seventy five thousand men to volunteer for the Army. She decided that she wanted to be a field nurse for the Union Army but those jobs were so dangerous that they were only given to men. So she cut her hair short, dressed up like a man, and enlisted under the name Franklin Thompson. Emma was assigned ... Read More:

This book was purchsed for our great-granddaughter who is interested in all things concerning knights, castles and living in those times. She did not have any eyewitness books and loves it. She is a good reader, but is not bogged down by reading long description, on lots of pages. This is perfect for a 8,9, or ten yr old and I love them too. Tons of information, and great pictures. Wonderful book

All right, I confess -- I borrowed that line from Mr. Miyagi (in "The Karate Kid") describing "Crane technique." Anyway, my 10-year-old son and I are reading this series. We study Chinese martial arts, so when we came upon these books we had to buy them. While we've enjoyed each entry in the series, "Crane" adds another layer by introducing Western characters; the cultural interplay as written by Mr. Stone is interesting.

The stories and characters are nicely constructed. Mr. Stone is adept at mixing compelling action with a strong plot (something sorely ... Read More:
