The institutional review coming with this page says: "Grade 5-10-Done in typical "Eyewitness" format, this volume touches upon such topics as Chinese history, the first emperor, inventions, health and medicine, waterways, food and drink, clothing, the Silk Road, and arts and crafts. Material from as recent as the last dynasty, which ended in 1912, is included. . . ." That summarizes nicely--both the age group for whom this book is intended and for the wide range of issues considered.

I have always loved Mark Twain since reading Huck Finn and Tom Sawyer as a kid. At one point I had even memorized "The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County" as a seventh-grader in Catholic school. Twain has always held a sentimental place close to my heart, so when our book club chose to read and discuss A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court, I was all for it.

I had heard vaguely of Twain's atheist mindset and his antagonism toward religion in general. But until I read Connecticut ... Read More:

The theme of this book, in my opinion, is to tell the story of Anastasia Romanov, who, as the title states, was, "The Last Grand Duchess," of Russia. This book tells about the life of this young grand duchess, from a fictional standpoint. It portrays her from the time she was thirteen, until the time of her death at seventeen. It shows how palace life could have been dull and dismal, but how it could occasionally be fun and interesting.
The main character's name is, as the title states, Anastasia Romanov. ... Read More:

This historical fiction is based on the true life of Helmuth Hubener, who made leaflets against the Nazis during WW2. I enjoyed this book and like how the author included one important fact of Hubener life, his faith. This story shows the courage of one teen who was willing to stand up to something he thought was evil.

At the end of the book is interesting information on Helmuth and his friends. Also photos, some that are chilling.

Are you looking for a short history book but has loads of information? If you're interested in WWII I would suggest the book: THE GOOD FIGHT-How WWII was won by: Stephen Ambrose. It may look like a boring history book on the outside but the info is numerous! It tells you of the origins of WWII in Europe and in Asia and tells you the most confidential secrets of WWII - like the Atomic bomb. Britain's secret service to locate enemy positions. And, did you know Rosenthal's picture of the flag raising on Mt Suribachi was the 2nd ... Read More:

"The Youngest Templar: Keeper of the Grail" by Michael P. Spradlin is the story of Tristan, an orphan who lived all his life at St. Alban's abbey in England during the Middle Ages. One day a squad of Templar Knights visited the abbey. When one of them asked Tristan if he would like to be his squire he accepted, not knowing his decision would change his life forever.

On a cold stormy night, a monk from St Alban's abbey found a baby swaddled in a blanket. ... Read More:

Armstrong Sperry's story of Mafatu, who is afraid of the ocean, does come alive with great and detailed descriptions about life in Polynesian islands which includes life, environment, and religion. The book is somewhat slow at times. The book is decent for young readers including struggling readers. Sperry's writing is clear and the story of Mafatu who tries to prove his courage despite his fear of the water. The book is satisfactory for me.

The book was pretty good as I recall (it was a while back when I read the book). If I remember right, the book seemed liked it ended TOO abruptly (Mazer left 'ya hanging). But after searching on Amazon I see why: There's a Sequel. It was A good book overall.

P.s. If I recall corectly, There was some mild profanity in it.
