Books : White Fang (Classic, Children's, Audio)
White Fang is another timeless classic written by Jack London. It is similar, but not the sequel to, The Call of the Wild. In this book, the main character is named White Fang, and he is three-quarters wolf and one-quarter dog. He is a naturally strong and agile and throughout the book his masters use these skills to make him into a vicious and nasty dog that fights to kill. After meeting Weedon Scott, White Fang starts to change. White Fang then shows he could also be a loving and caring dog, different ... Read More:

Not good for reading to child before bedtime. Not enough words, story, substance. We were bored with it after one reading. My 2yr son isn't old enough to read yet, but when he is, I am guessing he will read it once and then be bored with it again.

Okay, so the artwork is great (hence the two stars), there's no disputing that. The colors are rich and beautiful, the imagery creative, and the sense of atmosphere they give is really quite fantastic and captivating.

But the story... oh ouch. Suffice it to say that I seriously began to wonder if the main character had had a lobotomy somewhere in the intervening pages and I had somehow missed it. Case in point, and this is not giving anything away, but an escape scene through a forest was _immediately_ ... Read More:

Much like John Steinbeck, Richard Peck has a keen eye focused toward the picture he paints of life in early 20th Century America. Much like "A Long Way from Chicago", "A Year Down Yonder" finds Mary Alice spending a year of the Great Depression with the ever spry Grandma Dowdel. Though Mary Alice is older, Grandma still seems young. While the chapters can be enjoyed as short stories themselves, the year of adventures may be best enjoyed as a whole.

As the cycle of the school year goes, the events of Mary Alice and ... Read More:

I'd never read this book, so when I found it among the kids' books, I decided to give it a shot. And yes, I feel guilty for not having read it to my kids when they were small. Not to worry--I read to them a lot, just not this one, possibly because I wasn't familiar with it myself.

I'm sure everyone already knows the plot--my ignorance notwithstanding, it is a classic children's story. It's not the same as the movie, by the way--which I haven't seen, but I've heard about.

The Littles' second child turns out ... Read More:

While I absolutely LOVE (and always have) the beginning of the book, even the middle, detailing all of Zinkoff's various childish misadventures, I've always failed to understand how that's all resolved in the end. Perhaps 'resolved' is the wrong word, after all, we wouldn't all want our favorite Loser to turn into someone else entirely. More accurately, then, it just didn't feel like an ending. Then again, what would an appropriate ending have been, right? Zinkoff's fully comfortable with his status, it's not self-acceptance. ... Read More:

I love this book! I am 20 years old and I read this book in the 8th grade. It was awesome. I have read it, along with the rest of the trilogy every summer since then. It has everything I love about book taking you away in a fantasy world. I liked how there was a love story under the main story line. I still recommend this book to my family and friends who want to add a great book to their collection. You will not be disappointed! At least I hope not :)

My 4th grade son read this and loved it. He was fascinated by it and looked forward to our reading every day (he would read aloud to me). Having read the adult version, I was impressed by this childrens' copy because it stays true to the grain of the story. There is nothing Disneyfied about it. I highly recommend this book to any parent who is trying to introduce classic works to their children, as well as any parent seeking good quality literature. The illustrations are top-rate and further serve to involve the junior reader. Also highly recommended is Sutcliff's ... Read More:

My daughter enjoyed this, I think... The book is pretty. The pages have a good feel to them and there are nice illustrations throughout. But, the glue that holds the edges of the paper to the inside of the spine failed. My daughter kept reading it, leaving pages here, there and everywhere. There are so many scattered pages that I don't think we'll ever get it all back together. It would be a tedious job to collate them anyway. So, into the trash... I'm ranking this as a 3 because it's not the author's fault the mechanics of the book failed.
