I bought this classic book for my Grand Daughter, then started reading it myself as soon as I received it. 'hard to believe that I'd never read it in all my years. It may be "old fashioned" but I think it is a "must read" for all children.

I read this for a young adult lit class and absolutely fell in love with the blatant charm of the old-school small-town charm and the subtle heart that pervades even the brashness of the characters.

This is for fans of all of Peck's coloquial writing, though I'm sure it might annoy a few who would rather have their stories dark and serious. Still, I can't help but be fond of it, and it's hard to see a guy write a girl's mind as well as Mr. Peck can.

The Amulet of Samarkand (2003) is the first book in Jonathan Stroud's Bartimaeus Trilogy. This trilogy has the unique honor of having been banned in its entirety for the books' presentations of the occult. They also feature magnificent cover art by Melvyn Grant (who also has a ridiculously clever website). For many readers, that would be enticement enough. I didn't know about the book banning, but the cover art and blurb pushed it onto my ever-increasing "to read" list. A recommendation from a trusted YA ... Read More:

Jerry Renault is just your typical fourteen-year-old freshman (and football player) at a private Catholic high school minding his own business when, one day, a gang of student thugs called The Vigils task him with refusing to sell chocolates for the annual fundraiser. Brother Leon, a no-nonsense, obnoxious teacher doubles the usual candy order, then requires that the students take on the task of selling them (50 boxes each) willingly by requiring them to "accept" the chocolates during a daily roll call. Day after day, Jerry ... Read More:

The protagonist, a thoroughly spoiled youth named Robin, is rendered lame by a disease. Mercifully, and mysteriously enough, a monk comes to his abandoned home, picks him up and brings Robin to a monastery. At this gentle place, as the monk guides him, Robin learns self-discipline and many kinds of practical skills. It is a redemption, though Robin's spirit is still broken about his lame legs.

A wartime crisis comes about and Robin is the only one who can deliver vital information to his father, a lord in service to the ... Read More:

I nearly fell asleep while reading this book. It only gets more than 1 star from me because of the somewhat predictable plot twist at the end.

It's not as charming as all that, and definitely written in a different era - no non-white characters, zoo animals in cages, that sort of thing. There's nothing wrong with that - no sense judging it on our mores - but as it's not overly interesting either I can't sensibly give it more than three stars.

My 3-year old recently discovered Madeline. While this book did not become a favorite, it was read several times. It's over-sized, so not as easy for small hands- she has to put it on the floor or on a table to look at it as opposed to in her lap.

THIS BOOK HAS A GOOD ENOUGH STORY & IT DOES END WELL BUT I THINK THE STORY SHOULD HAVE HAD VISUAL PICTURES SOMETHING TO ADD TO THE TALE OF RALPH & HIS MOTORCYCLE-ING! I REALLY DONT ENJOY BOOKS WITH
OUT PICTURES TO HELP HOLD ON TO A YOUNG KIDS ATTENTION!
I ALSO DONT LIKE BOOKS THAT JUST GO ON & ON WITH PRINT THATS JUST TOO SMALL FOR YOUNG READERS TO KEEP THEIR PLACE EASILY! IT MAKES YOUR EYES TIRED & MAKES YOU REACH FOR ANOTHER BOOK INSTEAD!
ALL GOOD STORY BOOKS WOULD BECOME GREAT ... Read More:

As the country slides into the Great Depression, Joey and his sister Mary Alice are shipped out to the sticks to spend a week at Grandma Dowdel's. They batten down for seven days of boredom and country chores, but nothing could have prepared them for a storm like Grandma. She lies, cheats, smokes, and drinks beer. A mountain of a woman, she answers the door wielding a shotgun, welcoming visitors with a "What now?" or a "Whatever you're selling, I don't want any." But over time, Joey and Mary Alice learn to cherish their adventures with Grandma and to see ... Read More:
