| I bought this classic book for my Grand Daughter, then started reading it myself as soon as I received it. 'hard to believe that I'd never read it in all my years. It may be "old fashioned" but I think it is a "must read" for all children. |

| I read this for a young adult lit class and absolutely fell in love with the blatant charm of the old-school small-town charm and the subtle heart that pervades even the brashness of the characters.
This is for fans of all of Peck's coloquial writing, though I'm sure it might annoy a few who would rather have their stories dark and serious. Still, I can't help but be fond of it, and it's hard to see a guy write a girl's mind as well as Mr. Peck can. |

| The Amulet of Samarkand (2003) is the first book in Jonathan Stroud's Bartimaeus Trilogy. This trilogy has the unique honor of having been banned in its entirety for the books' presentations of the occult. They also feature magnificent cover art by Melvyn Grant (who also has a ridiculously clever website). For many readers, that would be enticement enough. | It's not as charming as all that, and definitely written in a different era - no non-white characters, zoo animals in cages, that sort of thing. There's nothing wrong with that - no sense judging it on our mores - but as it's not overly interesting either I can't sensibly give it more than three stars. |

| My 3-year old recently discovered Madeline. While this book did not become a favorite, it was read several times. It's over-sized, so not as easy for small hands- she has to put it on the floor or on a table to look at it as opposed to in her lap. |
