| I first read this book in grade school with the help of my mom. I remember it fondly as a heroic tale with a sad ending. I remember the illustrations vividly.
I walked past this book at the book store recently and was thrilled to see it and remember how much I had enjoyed it. I read it that night. In all honestly, I was greatly disappointed. | To me, this book requires some imagination and patience. I could not just breeze through the Prologue and other parts of the book without having to go back and reread some parts. But once I got into the beginning and reading about Arthur, the hesitant hero, the book grew on me.

| So I'm reviewing this out of tribute to the wonderful work of the late Ms. L'Engle. This is still a great book, even if it is led by the odd cherubim creature affectionately known as Prog. As usual, the Murray books combine the real and the serious with the fantastical, and a childhood disease leads to explorations into the world of the mitochrondia.
There might be a little too much biology and science in this book to make it completely enjoyable, but on one hand, if you understand, it makes the story that much more enjoyable. ... Read More: |

| I realized part of why I like the Disney Fairies better than the Disney Princesses: Disney Fairies have everything they need and are happy. Disney Princesses get everything they want. | First off, let me clarify in my personal response that I've never been a fan of the historical fiction genre. Historical fiction books bore me, and they never seem to contain the excitement found in contemporary fiction. Sarah, Plain and Tall, while more character-centric than most historical fiction books, still just didn't catch my interest. I was just glad that unlike many historical fiction books, this one actually didn't shove random historical facts down the readers' throats in massive clumps--the historical details were there, but very subtle.
