She recieved this book for a 2 year birthday present and she reads it every day and asks to play the CD so much that I had to put it on the ipod and keep a copy in the car. She loved it so much that I bought a copy for pre-school becuase she kept taking it there. The drawings are beautiful and the story is so funny. We use different voices for the different characters and laugh and laugh reading this book!

I think the temptation here is to give "Paddle to the Sea" five stars. After all, the book is a dazzling display of art and narrative, an educational and interesting tale. But five stars is the voice of the adult reviewer, and this book is mostly read by and to young children.

I was excited to stumble across this book in the library: I remembered it from my childhood. But I was surprised to find how little of the book I remembered. Mostly I remembered the general idea--perhaps my parents were ... Read More:

Lois Lowry provides a little look into a fantasy world. No special powers, luckily, but it is an imaginary land with imaginary people. They could exist though, people could be like that... As the book opens our special girl is somewhat even luck to be alive.. Usually when a child is born with a disfigurement they are sent out to die, but Kira, now a teenager was luckily spared. The words "Gathering Blue" can have more then one connotation, but both may apply here. As you read the book, look occasionally ... Read More:

Rather than focusing on the political aspects of a dystopia, Anderson focuses on the cultural aspects. Almost everyone has an implanted "feed" from a very young age which gives them access to unlimited information, but also seems to allow corporations unlimited access to the individual. Everyone is constantly bombarded with offers and news of sales from corporations. This has the somewhat predictable result of dumbing down the population, to the point where all they care about are stupid shows on the feed, and shopping. ... Read More:

I nearly fell asleep while reading this book. It only gets more than 1 star from me because of the somewhat predictable plot twist at the end.

148.The Second Summer of the Sisterhood by: Ann Brashares

Much to my surprise, this was every bit as good as the first one. The interweaving of the girls' mothers as a parallel Sisterhood was very effectively done, and never more so than when the Traveling Pants almost blurred the distinction between the two groups (I won't say more so as to keep from spoiling a very good scene). Bridget's rediscovery of her mother and reconstruction of herself is the best and most emotionally powerful of the story threads, although all are generally well-done.

The only place I think Brashares tends ... Read More:

A friend loaned me her copies of this series. I enjoyed them so much I wanted my children to be able to read them, but I was apprehensive about having them read her autographed copies, and they weren't available at our local library. I was so delighted to find them at amazon.com and at such a great price I just couldn't pass them up. This is one of those true classics, great for both kids and adults. Enjoy!

150.A Year Down Yonder by: Richard Peck

I read this for a young adult lit class and absolutely fell in love with the blatant charm of the old-school small-town charm and the subtle heart that pervades even the brashness of the characters.

This is for fans of all of Peck's coloquial writing, though I'm sure it might annoy a few who would rather have their stories dark and serious. Still, I can't help but be fond of it, and it's hard to see a guy write a girl's mind as well as Mr. Peck can.
