This is the original Rainbow Fish story which is a simple moral tale designed for very young children. The Rainbow Fish is beautiful, but arrogant and selfish. He has to learn that superficial qualities such as beauty and wealth cannot be valued over friendship and happiness.

It is at best an oversimplification to say this is a book about sharing, and I cannot agree at all with the reviewers who claim it is about being forced to give up one's unique identity in order to fit in with the ... Read More:

Books : Journey to the Center of the Earth
When I was a kid, I used to read lot of Jules Verne. In those days I couldn't read neither English, nor French so I was destined to use translations which were few and of varying quality. Nevertheless, I think I'll always remember captain Nemo and his mysterious ship, his exile on the island and his death. Stories of Jules Verne always stirred my fantasy, and I guess that he should be blamed, together with Poe and Tolkien, for me entering the world of SF&F and staying there for a long time.

Books : Fever 1793
Fever, 1793 was an accidental find. It is a totally intriguing book about the malaria epidemic in Philadelphia. It is historically accurate and the author cites her sources at the end of the book so they don't interfere with the adventure. This is a young girl's story of survival when the fever strikes her home. She deals with death, looters, and economic survival in a community ruled by fear. This would be a great read-aloud for a teacher of US history or just a great book to curl up with if you want ... Read More:

This is one of my favorites of Ms. Funk's works. She brings the tone of severity down a notch for a fantasy that is adorable and kid-friendly, but still containing all the right ingredients for one exciting story. Maybe it's a little cliche, but it's the classic story we all like: nice dragons fighting against evil monsters with great, quirky characters and mystery and intrigue. Funk even goes a little high fantasy with good ol' fashioned prophecies and ideas.

Still, in the end, it's a sweet, charming, ... Read More:

This tale of a bunny found in a movie theater showing Dracula is as old as I am. But the lovably dumb dog who is the point of view character and his cat friend who is too smart for his own good really seem to connect with kids. This books also has just enough tension to be exciting and enough camp to make the mystery safe rather than scary. Horror fans take note, this is a great starter book for the genre.

I came to this book in the odd position of having seen the movie first. I must say, I was quite surprised. Aside from the names of the characters and the curse of obedience, little was the same. When I started reading, my mind was trying to make comparisons... but the stories were so different that I had to stop. The two plots are so dissimilar, they can't really be compared.

The book features a spunky heroine who can more than look after herself, even in the face of a curse that makes her obey any order that's ... Read More:

I usually save long reviews for products that caused problems. So this one's short and sweet. This BOOK is Fantastic. It's short, and a dahl classic. Plus, I believe they're turning it into a movie starring Clooney, Murray, and Blanchet.

SO much better than I expected! The dialogue flowed very well and the characters were all highly realistic. There were some nitpicky things I disliked, though. I think the title was misleading, since they didn't actually go to Birmingham until very late in the story, and to me, it's not the biggest part of the story. (Maybe it should have just been titled 'The Watsons'? Their familial bonds are what the story is about to me.) Another thing that bothered me was the first page, too many similes and metaphors. This is not continued ... Read More:

My fifth-grade students love this series. I've used Gary Paulsen's "Hatchet" series to hook boys into reading. They love the outdoor adventure genre, and can't stop reading once they've started!
