"Red Planet" is one of Heinlein's best juveniles. I think it was the first or second Heinlein book I ever read, back in the 1950's. Of course, I read a heavily edited version, back then. This edition restores the text to the original Heinlein text, before editing. The restoration is a great improvement, as today's juveniles are more sophisticated than I was, back then.

About the only change I would make today is to have Heinlein's Mars be a planet circling another sun. Our Mars ... Read More:

The Red Necklace is centered on a group of theater performers in Paris during the French Revolution. Yann Margoza is a young gypsy boy who knows nothing of his past and his guardian, a dwarf named TĂȘtu, will not tell him about the magical blood that they share. The mysterious past bleeds into the dramatic present when they are summoned for a private performance by the terrifying Count Kalliovski. A simple magic show leads to a bloody death and Yann is thrust into an adventure involving a beautiful heiress and ... Read More:

The whole family read this book and couldn't get enough of Iggy's adventures! My daughter 9, my son 13 and I (over 25) loved it! It is a fast read with every chapter leaving us wanting to read just one more before bedtime. The writing is beautifully detailed and funny for my 13 yr. old to enjoy, yet easy to read for my younger one. The illustrations are fantastic, too! Great for a read out loud family book!

Goodness! Was Ms. Reese really trying on purpose to make this as cheesy as it was? I'm a little surprised! I wanted to read a good pirate book and instead I find myself in a soap opera that is too afraid to do anything serious or dramatic. The characters were flat and moved only by passion and the necessary plot. If Ms. Rees were going for melodramatic, couldn't there be some fighting and proper death to round everything off?

Maybe it is because I'm not a teenager anymore, but this was fluffier than I think it ... Read More:

Sorely disappointed that this book is considered age-appropriate for ages 9 to 12. I can appreciate the fantasy genre. However, half-human walking rodents marching in mass, eating everything in sight, including flesh from humans until the point of death seems past the point of fantasy genre for the intended audience age. I also thought the medieval terminology necessary for the plot and setting of the story will require the age group of 9 to 12 to have a very extensive vocabulary to totally understand the book. I cannot imagine ... Read More:

This review relates to the Heritage Press edition, as released in the 1940's and re-released in 1969.

One of Heritage's most successful designs - a classic, playful, but elegant piece of work with relatively large (18 point type) and two color printing throughout.

The Tenniel drawings are all here, banded by blue, and reproduced with a beautiful amount of detail on lovely cream-white stock with a vellum finish.

Designer W. A. Wiggins has bound the book in blue linen with details in stamped indigo and ... Read More:

Having read all the books in English, I picked this up to see what I could make of it. It is extremely well-edited; it keeps the important plot points and preserves all the flavor of the original book. Reading it in French, I noticed some subtle (and really adorable) things that I missed in English, simply becuase I had to read more carefully. I kept my dictionary close at hand, but it really is written on the level of, probably, a 9-year-old.

This books along with the latter talent books are so unrealistic as to be boring. The first talent books, Pegasus in Flight and Pegasus in Space were interesting and fun because we were reading about real characters. They had Talent, but they were still real people. The characters in the latter talent books are nothing less than gods, with an almost all-powerful Talent, and seemingly little or no personal problems or limitations (which makes th books dull). Also, what the books really portray, without actually saying it is basically a Talent autocracy. ... Read More:

Quite simply this is a very enjoyable book. Its structure is a well woven blend of ancient and modern myths and legends, primarily fairies and baseball; that is, the summer country and the good ole summertime. The book also features everyone's favorite trickster: Coyote.

The adventure is well written and believable regardless of its unbelievable content. The story line is fast paced and kept me reading. I cared about the characters good and bad. The conclusion is satisfying. All in all the book has genuine literary content and intriguing ideas. It is ... Read More:
