I was looking forward to receiving this book, following rave reviews and awards. But both I and my twin nearly-five-year-olds have been very much disappointed, and are unlikely to finish the second book (or even start the third) in this three-volume compilation.

While the theme and content (a quest to rescue a baby dragon, subsequent adventures with dragon) was extremely appealing given this audience's passions, the poor execution of this story neutered the otherwise promising tale.

I loved Just So Stories as a child, and the stories are - for the most part - still really wonderful. Be aware if you are buying this for someone, however, that some of the stories are less than flattering to minorities and one of the stories does use the word "nigger," so this is definitely a book for someone who is old enough to talk to about language and what's appropriate and so on.

My son was very disturbed about where the parents were. She wanted to know if the parents were mean and why they didn't love their own daughter. Yikes. I had never read Eloise before, but had heard it was cute. I guess it had its moments, but I do feel sorry for Eloise.

I think this was a darling story. My 6 year old son loved it. I can't get over all the reviewers that make such a huge deal about the spanking reference. Get a grip! Frances is obviously a secure child and was being manipulative in getting up. Her father was very gentle with her. I agree with the person that thinks that what the anti-spankers can't get over is the fact that you can be a kind, gentle parent and still give a spanking. If more parents were like Frances' father, maybe there'd be less manipulative, misbehaved children. It ... Read More:

18.Millions of Cats (Paperstar) by: Wanda Gag

Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Books : Millions of Cats (Paperstar)
The illustrations are pretty plain, being that they're black and white, and the story even a little lame, but the "chorus" of the book ("Hundreds of cats, Thousands of cats, Millions and billions and trillions of cats"), is what makes the book a standout for me.

20.Blueberries for Sal by: Robert McCloskey
September 17, 1948
Average Rating: out of 5 stars
>>More Details
Books : Blueberries for Sal
This is a simple book of a Little Sal, and Little Sal's mother, and Little Bear, and Little Bear's mother, who get mixed up with each other on Blueberry Hill.

It's very realistically written and illustrated, and the exciting part isn't too scary for little ones.

I will note that it's a bit long - maybe better for kids with longer attention spans than shorter ones. If they're as young as Little Sal is, it might be better to wait a year before reading :)
