Well, everyone seems to be raving about this book, and I certainly think Peter David's writing is beautiful, clever, and pulls off the Barrie-esque tone needed for anyone redescribing Peter Pan. But I wondered about its target audience, since it's drawn from a children's classic, but is dark with adult sensibilities. That made it feel a bit oddball to me. The author has written STNG books, and that's when it struck me. Books like that are the avid fan's way of inserting him/herself into a beloved ... Read More:

62.Tree and Leaf by: J. R. R. Tolkien

Books : Tree and Leaf
I've always wanted to read Tolkien's other works; I've read the Silmarillion a couple of times, and never really enjoyed it as much as the Hobbit or LOTR. But nonetheless, I've had an old copy of a Tolkien book called Tree and Leaf for years -- it was my parents' originally -- and I finally dove into it.

It's short, only two pieces, but it was excellent -- and excellent in a way that makes me ten times more eager to look for other Tolkien ephemera than The Silmarillion ever did. The first ... Read More:

I agree with another reviewer that too many authors/titles are omitted, like the gruffalo books, thomas the tank books, etc. Very disappointing. I would have returned it if I did not have it shipped internationally.

Cashdan, Sheldon. 1999. The Witch Must Die: The Hidden Meaning of Fairy Tales. New York: Basic Books.
Author Sheldon Cashdan's parents read the more popular fairy tales such as Hansel and Gretel and Jack in the Beanstalk to him as a child. Still, he admits his most vivid childhood memories of fairy tales were brought to him courtesy of Walt Disney. He recalls "sitting in a darkened movie theater watching Snow White and holding (his) breath as the gamekeeper prepared to cut out the heroine's heart" (Cashdan, 1). ... Read More:

Good-natured true-mystery history of the men and women responsible for the Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys series of juvenile fiction.

The "Stratemeyer Syndicate" was a group of ghostwriters who created the kids books based on titles and detailed outlines prepared by Edward Stratemeyer, for anywhere from $85 to $150 per book! This system lasted for over 40 years, until the small-town 19th century economics and the cult of Carolyn Keene meant the ending of the syndicate system. The main role of Carolyn Keene was then ... We have only read one of the parables and even though the language is written in a more formal style, the parable was interesting and has a lot of room for discussion about life. We look forward to reading more.

"Harry Potter" is a popular, but very controversial series. From accusations of encouraging witchcraft to complaints about the book's social themes, there has been much criticism of the series, despite its massive appeal. In "The Wisdom of Harry Potter: What Our Favorite Hero Teaches Us about Moral Choices," Edmund M. Kern presents a defense against the criticisms and succeeds brilliantly. His defense is comphrensive, thoughtful, detailed and well-organized. He even goes further, providing background on the series and offering his own analysis ... Read More:

A cleverly written biography of one of the most influential writers of the 20th century. Although he died not so long ago, it seems as if Dr. Seuss the legend has been replaced by Dr. Seuss the label in the minds of America's youth. This biography was a touching, insightful look into the life of the man behind the cat. Although obviously written with a pro-Seuss bias (they were his friends, after all), the book was pleasure to read, and is sure to be passed on to friends and family.

For those of you who love Eric Carle, his art and stories, this book is a must have. A "coffee table" book that allows you to enjoy and cherish the work of this very creative artist and author. Only thing better would be to have one of his original drawings! Reading Eric Carle with my sons when they were small was definitely one of our favorites things of the day.
