| This book was required book for one of my college classes, and after purchasing it, I found it to be a valuable tool, not only in the classroom, but at my own home as well. There are so many great books referenced in the text and many ways are explored in the teaching of the books. A definite tool for the early and elementary educator. Or just a parent who needs references. This book is a keeper!! |

| I definitely didn't agree with a lot of what Zipes had to say - he was much too pessimistic and bitter for my tastes. Additionally, the idea of Disney-as-embodiment-of-all-things-evil is a little tired.
However, what I enjoyed about the book was how much it got me thinking about my own views on the material. Quite a few times I wished Zipes was in front of me so we could discuss and debate. | I first came across this when I was...well, the most I shall admit to is that I was a preteen at the time. I actually quite enjoyed it, especially the illustrations, but due to being broke when I found it...did not buy it, much to my regret. (Because of the current price, I'm unlikely to buy it now, even though I'd dearly adore to have a copy.)

| I stumbled into a later volume of this series (Books Kids Will Sit Still For 3: A Read-Aloud Guide (Children's and Young Adult Literature Reference)) while working my way through books about books for children at the library. We read to the toddler daughter daily and I am always looking for new picture books to try. I was amazed and delighted by volume 3 and promptly went looking for the previous two volumes which older books. | Cheryl Coon's book is a smorgasbord of information for the literate parent. I have seen nothing like it in my years as a psychologist for children. It provides a `natural' approach to understanding the myriad situations that a parent and child will, hopefully, face together. Nothing seems to bond a child and parents so much as reading a favorite book together again and again. |

| This is a wonderful book about education and children's stories. But it loses two stars because for some reason, Kohl's great essay "Rosa Was Tired" has been removed from this edition. You'll need to get the original edition of "Should We Burn Babar?" if you want to read Kohl's fascinating exploration of the way Rosa Parks' story was distorted in schools all over America. |
