Written as a collection of free-verse poems by a teenaged girl in the Oklahoma panhandle during the Depression, Out of the Dust is a masterpiece of historical fiction. It definitely deserves the Newbery Medal that it won in 1998. The teenaged emotions are pure, and believable. The imagery was so vivid that I formed a new understanding of the Dust Bowl. I admit, I was a little skeptical about the free-verse, and only picked up the book late at night with the intention of tasting the first few pages. ... Read More:

Books : Black Beauty (Oxford World's Classics)
It's kind of sad that we have passed that period of time when every little girl was obsessed with this book. Ah, that glory time of girls and horses! Even so, Black Beauty continues to endure as a classic in my mind of both decent anthropomorphism and great Victorian writing.

In the tradition of great animal classics, this story is written from the perspective of the horse, called, among other names, Black Beauty. This strong horse of the most delightful British personality leads a life full ... Read More:

Children's literature may be written FOR children, but it is written BY adults, adults who bring to it the same cultural worldview, institutional biases and political agendae that any author brings to any literary polemic or work of art. This simple truism is frequently overlooked in most considerations of children's literature, which is too often held to lesser standards -- as long as the words are appropriately short and not obscene, and the illustrations are appropriately colorful and not obscene, and there ... Books : The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (Courage Literary Classics)
I somehow tragically managed to make my way to adulthood with never reading anything but the kiddie version of this book. When I found this book for super-cheap in the teachers' lounge book sale and I figured "hey, why not?" And thus I picked it up and immediately fell in love with the sheer Old-South charm that only Twain can deliver. Really, people, it is no wonder that this book is such a classic! It may not have the soulful human reflections of "Huckleberry Finn", but in the solemn concern for the pleasures of boyhood ... Read More:

They don't seem to require reading classic literature in the schools any more, so I decided to build a library for my 12-year old granddaughter. She has read them all, including this one, so it wasn't a bad idea. Now, if I could just get her to call her old grandfather more often....

After finishing book 7, but before rereading all of the HP books, I wanted to read something that was about the HP books, to see what other people had to say.

This book, consisting of 16 essays, is not about the Harry Potter books. Rather, it uses the characters and events in the Harry Potter books to illustrate the philosophical arguments that are studied at University level in Philosophy 101. For the most part, it won't add to you knowledge of Harry Potter, but it will make you glad you don't have to take Philosophy ... Read More:

I was very disappointed in this volumn. I love the Harry Potter books and I haven't been a Christian since the through me out for being queer, like Dumbledore. I have read several books by the Hogwarts Professor, but this one is so drenched in anti-atheist-Christ-is-Everything sentiment that it was a struggle to get through. The author reminds me of the old saying "To a Hammer everything looks like a nail." Mr. Granger finds Christ and Christianity in every nook and cranny. Never mind the fact that the number one point that Ms Rowling makes ... Read More:

My sons 8 and 10 really enjoyed the bedtime reading of Greek myths from a collection by this same author - so we decided to try this "Classics" collection. They have really enjoyed most of the stories - and I enjoy exposing them to classics like Don Quixote, Romeo and Juliet, and Tom Sawyer. The stories are excerpted\simplified while maintaining key aspects of the language and key phrases "...would not a rose by any other name..."

The book is broken into different age-related sections -which appear to be pretty accurate. My ten year ... Read More:
