Really enjoyed this book. Read the stories in the car on a long trip. My children kept wanting one more. Very interesting stories and excellent help in the Story Notes. Also used this book with a small group of students and we had a wonderful time discussing each story. Highly recommended. I would love another one just like this with new stories!!!

"It is true that fairy tales have an effect, but it is a healthy, nurturing, cathartic effect, not a fault. Using archetypes and symbolic language, they externalize for the listener conflicts and situations that cannot be spoken of or explained or as yet analyzed. They give substance to dreams." (p 44)

In a time in which fantasy tales are often under challenge, Yolen makes a strong case for their importance in Touch Magic. She believes that, more than magic and mythical creatures, these ... Read More:

Books : The Child That Books Built: A Life in Reading
Even though I am a few years younger than Mr. Spufford, he and I started reading at just about the same time. His rendition of the discovery of the magic of words on a page is the best I have ever read, and the first that directly connects with my own experience. Even all these many years later, I still remember how amazing it was when those strange marks on paper came together to form... a STORY. Spufford's description of this journey is lyrical, magical and such that I wish to put most of his first chapter ... Read More:

This book offers indepth information about a variety of topics concerning childrens literature. In the first chapters it focuses on the development of children and their perceptions of literature at different ages. It then informs the reader about the historical development of children's literature. The biggest part of the book, however, is about the different genres of literature available. What I liked about this book was that it offered many examples and reading samples. It also included several essays from children ... Read More:

Books : Pooh and the Philosophers
If there was a ZERO star rating, I would have given it here. I became interested in this book after reading and thoroughly enjoying the âaeTao of Poohâ by Benjamin Hoff. Unfortunately, I quickly found out that this is the wrong book and for good reasons. First of all I found it extremely boring and often difficult to follow. This deficiency however is merely the symptom of a much deeper problem inherent in the attempt to use Pooh out of all creatures to illustrate Western philosophy. Pooh is the epitome of an easygoing ... Read More:

I run hot & cold on Burgess (mainly warmish). This was a burner.

The characters were "real" people with "real" foibles. The humor wasn't forced but found in the out-of-ordinary events of ordinary folks.

This is a great starting place for readers new to Burgess.
