| This book does a good job with what seems to be the recurring Fancy Nancy theme of making the best of a not-so-great situation, and keeps with the "fancy words" concept from the original book.
I do like the notion of introducing kids to more difficult words, but I do have a say it makes it a little odd to have those words show up in an "I Can Read" book. As a Level 1, it's really meant for a parent to read with them anyway, but my 6-year old is probably reading Level 3 or 4 of this ... Read More: |

| I have read dozens of young adult, urban fantasy, fiction, etc novels about vampires. Yes all of them seem similar, all of them may have semi-predictable outcomes after reading so many for so many years, but Marked is one of the books I had high hopes for, only to be disappointed. There's plot, action, originality, but to be totally honest the writing style did not do it justice. | I flipped through this book today with intentions of buying it for my 7 year old son. He is a huge fan of David Macaulay, and has thoroughly enjoyed The Way Things Work. I did not, however, purchase the book because of the last chapter on reproduction. This will be a great tool for kids who are ready for that particular lesson in life, however my 7 year old is not quite ready. | Inkheart melded the real world and a fantasy world in a way I never thought possible. As an English teacher, I loved how Funke praised the written word and then made it come alive. While I thought Inkheart dragged out the story a little bit, I was intrigued enough to read Inkspell, mostly because I wanted to see what happened to Mo, Meg, and Elinor.

| A lot of teenage girls are claiming that the book Twilight by Stephanie Meyer "sucked them in from the first page". Funny, because Twilight didn't work for me (but that is neither here nor there)...but Inkheart did.
As a lover of books since before I could even read properly, I love the attention to details and description that Funke puts into this novel, and the shout-outs to classics (such as Meggie and Mo using Elvish writing from The Lord of the Rings, my favorite book). | Perhaps appropriate for discussion with an older child, but written and drawn for younger ones. Brings to mind cartoon Camel cigarette art drawn to appeal to adolescents. As a parable this story has power and merit along the lines of the song "Cat's In The Cradle" by Harry Chapin, but its presentation in a format for young children is totally inappropriate. This is a horrible, disturbing book. |
